Pocket watch: precious gold verge watch with agate case, royal watchmaker Baillon Paris, ca. 1750
Ca. Ø41.5mm, ca. 63g, 18K gold, back with finest agate and unique structure, signed and numbered verge movement No.195, especially beautiful verge bridge, exceptionally large silver regulating disc, hexagonal pillars, enamel dial (small restoration at the winding hole), very rare diamond set hands, intact, cleaning recommended. Verge watches with agate cases are exceptionally rare. Jean-Baptiste Baillon (de Fontenay) was a very famous and one of the richest watchmakers in Paris in the 18th century. He was appointed master watchmaker in 1727. His own manufactory was located in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where various watchmakers worked for him, which was quite exceptional for the time. The factory was under the management of Jean Jodin (1715-1761), but was closed in 1765. Ferdinand Berthoud was very impressed by Baillon's workshop, business size and excellent quality at the time. In 1753 Berthoud wrote about Baillon's shop: "It is at present the most beautiful and richest watch shop. Diamonds were not only used on pocket watches, but even on large watches". Baillon became a watchmaker at the court of Queen Marie Antoinette around 1770. Jean-Baptiste Baillon died exceptionally rich in 1772, his assets amounting to 384,000 livres. Copies of his movements can be found in museums in Paris, Toulouse, Brussels, Florence, London and New York, among others (source Dr. Crott).

Pocket watch: rarity, double-sided astronomical Geneva verge watch with 4 complications and 5 central hands, Francois et George Archard, ca. 1780
Ca. Ø51mm, ca. 101g, 18K gold, à-goutte case, punched FFC No.7, extremely rare verge movement with 4 complications, display of the day of the week, the corresponding planetary signs, the date and the month, all via 5 central gold hands, enamel dial on both sides, intact, in very beautiful condition. The watch is a real rarity from a technical point of view. Most early astronomical pocket watches have several sub-dials for the different calendar functions, on this watch all indications are read via central hands. The gold-cased version is also extremely rare, these watches usually have silver cases. The Achard brothers mainly produced very fine enamel watches and highly complicated automata. The watch here proofs that they also made technically highly complicated and extraordinarily rare astronomical watches for the time before 1800.

Marine chronometer: important, very fine marine chronometer/deck chronometer with pivoted detent escapement in manner of Louis Berthoud, Henri Motel, Horloger de la Marine Royale, No. 188, circa 1835
Ca. Ø108mm, original brass case, screwed, under the rim is the start/stop mechanism, case, movement mounting and movement with matching number 188, very fine chronometer movement, signed and numbered, decorative finish, conical steel movement pillars, chain/fusee, pivoted detent chronometer escapement in manner of Berthoud, front winding, stoppable seconds device, bimetallic four-arm chronometer balance with 4 movable weights, finely adjustable hairspring mounting with 4 adjusting screws, blued conical hairspring, balance with endstone, silvered dial with Roman numerals, blued steel hands, in working order. In our opinion, this rarity is in original condition. The dial is unfortunately very aged. However, with a magnifying glass the original signature "Henri Motel, Horloger de la Marine Royale" can be seen, above it in an arc "Dépôt de la Marine". Jean-Francois Henri Motel was Louis Berthoud's best student and inherited his company as chronometer supplier to the French Navy. Many of his ship chronometers were later converted into deck watches for the navy. This chronometer No.188 still has the original start/stop mechanism, which is no longer present in most known Motel chronometers!
