Pocket watch: an absolute rarity, “Montre a tact” by Breguet, Le Roy Paris, circa 1812
Ca. Ø 46mm, ca. 53g, silver/pink gold, early Lepine caliber with rare virgule escapement, decentral enamel dial, single-handed, very nice condition, winding needs service. The rotatable back cover has a red gold arrow to indicate the hours. The center piece is studded with red gold buttons for feeling the time. Breguet was the first watchmaker to create such a watch – he sold the first of its kind at the beginning of 1799 to Madame Betancourt, the wife of his best friend. He made other watches in various designs, some with quite large tactile indicators and others with only small ones. The price of the watches Breguet made for his wealthiest clients was between 10,000 and 15,000 francs. In the early 19th century, this was an enormous sum of money, but the watches were in high demand. One of the reasons for their popularity was the fact that at that time it was considered improper to look at one's watch in public; these expensive watches made it possible to tell the time without taking the watch out of one's pocket. Few others made this type of watch except Breguet; one of them was Le Roy Horloger de S.A.I et R. Madame à Paris (Bazile-Charles Le Roy (1765-1839)). Le Roy created some of these watches, the most elaborate of which was made for the Prince of Hesse – it had 17-carat diamond touch indicators and is now in the collection of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. It was made around 1810, is engine-turned and enamelled, and bears the number 3191. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/9Y0)

Pocket watch: one of the largest and most important, exquisite enamel watches by Gregson, circa 1780
Ca. Ø 60 mm, ca. 102 g, glazed, gilt protective case, 18K gold case of outstanding quality, multi-colored paillons on both sides in the edge area, very fine enamel painting on the back, tiny opening button in the pendant, extremely rare, super flat Hessen caliber, signed, cylinder escapement, signed enamel dial and extremely rare gold arrow hands, in working order. Thanks to the original protective case, this treasure is in its outstanding original condition. To the best of our knowledge, it is also one of the largest and most precious enamel watches created by its famous maker. Jean-Pierre Gregson was originally from England. In 1776, he became the royal court watchmaker in Paris. Gregson had a penchant for complicated escapements and unusual shapes. He often used cylinder or virgule escapements in his pocket watches. He was also one of the few to use the super-flat Hessen caliber. Among other things, he also built gold enamel watches with a virgule escapement and watches with visible balance wheels and center seconds. His prominent position is also evident from the fact that in 1786 he was appointed to a commission to establish a royal manufactory. The other members were the most famous watchmakers in France – Breguet, Berthoud and Lepaute. After the start of the French Revolution, being a royal watchmaker was not particularly beneficial for business, and Gregson quickly renounced his title. In 1790, he returned to London, his safe homeland. Provenance: Antiquorum Geneva 1995, then estimated at 20,000 - 25,000 Swiss francs (https://www.cortrie.de/go/NB6).

Ø 58mm, ca. 143g, 18K rose gold, engine-turned, signed dome, verge movement with quarter-repeater, the front featuring the particularly magnificent Jacquemart automaton with 3 figures and 4 automaton functions, golden facade, in the lower area 2 putti striking bells with hammers, in the upper part, Punchinello appears in the window and strikes the hours on a bell, followed by the two putti who strike the quarter hours, enamel dial mounting, Breguet steel hands, very beautiful condition, in working order and with a very good sound. These special automatons with four sequences are much rarer than the conventional version of a Jacquemart with only two figures. An identical piece was auctioned in Geneva in 2013 for 15,000 Swiss francs (https://www.cortrie.de/go/O4E). We sold another one at our 251st auction in 2020 for €14,200 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/lLN). Georges A(r)chard was born on March 20, 1746 in Aouste-sur-Sye, (Aoste), Drôme, Rhône-Alpes, France. The Geneva-based watchmaker and his brother Jean-Francois founded a company that mainly produced enamel watches with additional functions and existed until 1796. The brothers Jean-Francois & Georges Archard were also suppliers of Breguet. Later, he founded the company “Georges Archard & Cie” with his son-in-law Antoine. After that, he also founded the company “Archard & Fils” together with his son Marc Antoine Archard.

Chronometer: important French chronometer, Winnerl No. 552, ca. 1845
3-part mahogany box with a bone number plate, ca. 12 × 10 × 6 cm, brass casing signed Fröhlich Berlin, very fine Winnerl chronometer movement, signed and numbered, spring detent chronometer with helical hairspring, original signed enamel dial with power reserve indicator, blued steel hands, in working order and in very good condition. Due to the signature on the case, it can be assumed that this extremely rare French chronometer was restored/modernized around 1900 by E. Fröhlich. However, the movement and dial are in their original condition. Joseph Thaddeus Winnerl (1799-1886) was born in Mureg/Styria on 25 January 1799. He completed his apprenticeship with Georg Schmidt Fidel in Graz in 1816. From 1823, Winnerl worked in Breslau, then at Kessels in Altona, at Urban Jürgensen in Copenhagen and from 1829 in Paris, where he worked for Breguet, among others. Today he is considered one of the most important French chronometer makers. A comparable chronometer movement is the pocket chronometer No. 433, sold at auction in Geneva in 1999 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/KgZ).
