287-4059 Pocket watch: technically fascinating Le Roy & Fils featuring the first version of the crown winding mechanism, circa 1840–1845
Ca. Ø40mm, ca. 39g, 18-carat gold, English royal coat of arms on the reverse, French 18-carat gold hallmark from 1838, very early crown-winding movement with wolf's toothing, signed, No. 28604, dated between 1840 and 1845 according to the numbering system, Enamel dial, gold Breguet hands, in working order. Jean Adrien Philippe (1814–1894), one of the founders of Patek Philippe, was a prominent French watchmaker who revolutionised the watch industry with his invention of the crown winding mechanism (remontoir). This invention made it possible to wind pocket watches and set the hands without a separate key. According to most sources, the invention took place in 1842. The Le Roy presented here was presumably also made between 1840 and 1845, making it one of the earliest known watches with crown winding!
