292-4354 Marine chronometer: interesting English chronometer, J. Sewill Liverpool/Frodsham London No. 219, circa 1840
3-piece mahogany case ca. 16 x 16 x 18 cm, gimbal suspension, brass case, spring detent chronometer with helical hairspring, silvered dial with power reserve indicator and an interesting signature: Jos. Sewill, Liverpool, corrected by H. Frodsham No. 219, steel hands, with the movement intact, circa 1840. Joseph Sewill, of Liverpool (Lancashire), was a prominent chronometer maker and ‘Maker to the Admiralty’. With the number 219, this is likely to be one of the earliest surviving chronometers made by him.
