255-4330 Watch key: extremely rare, museum-quality gold/enamel key with musical movement, ca. 1810
Ca. 50 × 30mm, 18K gold, face with enamel painting, winding of the musical movement via the eyelet, release via a small slider on the side, engine turned on the back, very good condition, in working order. Gold/enamelled objects with musical movement or automatons are the large treasures of this collection area. We are aware of around 10 comparable objects that have been sold at international auctions at collector's prices. An almost matching key with only a different motif in the centre, otherwise exactly the same, achieved almost 50,000 Swiss Francs in Geneva in 2006 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/mrR). The key shown here comes from the collection described and illustrated in Yves Droz's "Le Clefs du Temps" and was probably the most valuable piece in this collection.
