287-4173 Pocket watch: significant, large gold and enamel verge watch set with pearls and gemstones and featuring the very fine painting, Charles Le Roy Paris, ca.1780
Ca. Ø53mm, ca. 92g, 18K gold, floral decoration enamelled on the reverse, set with red stones and miniature pearls, very fine enamel painting of the reverse, signed verge movement, No. 280, signed enamel dial (small craquelling around the edge), presumably original gold hands, movement intact, a rarity. Provenance: ‘The Van Cauwenbergh Collection’, auctioned in Hong Kong in 1989. Charles Le Roy founded France’s oldest watchmaking manufactory in Paris in 1764. Highly esteemed by the royal couple and the entire court, Le Roy was a welcome guest at the Louvre. He was renowned for the perfection of his watches, many of which were to be found in royal palaces and mansions throughout Europe.
