287-4184 Pocket watch: extremely rare Berthoud Adam & Eve automaton with compass and mock pendulum, ca. 1790
Ca. Ø54.5mm, ca. 108g, glazed on both sides, front featuring an off-centre enamel dial with an enamelled Adam & Eve automaton; the encircling snake serves as a seconds indicator; rear featuring a regulating mechanism and two viewing windows, one offering a view of the mock pendulum, second window for the compass, beneath which is the signature ‘Berthoud a Paris’, verge escapement, exceptionally good condition, in working order, very rare. The double-sided version of the Adam & Eve automaton is very rare. All known examples of this design are by Berthoud. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/bR4). The version with a compass is the rarest of all.
