287-4208  Pocket watch: an absolute rarity, Lepine with ink chronograph, Rieussec invenit et fecit, ca. 1835

Ca. Ø49mm, ca. 70g, original silver case, dome signed and marked ‘Chronographe’, cylinder movement with key winding, slide in the bezel for stopping and starting the chronograph, pendant pusher for ink marking, enamel dial, gold Breguet hands, superbly preserved and in working order. Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec (1781–1866) was a prominent French watchmaker and inventor. He was evidently a gifted child and had already established himself as a watchmaker in the Rue du Marché-Palu by 1805. In 1817, he was appointed court watchmaker. Rieussec’s brother, Nicolas Joseph, was heavily involved in the world of horse racing in Paris, and so it is no coincidence that Nicolas Mathieu seized the opportunity to develop a timekeeping device that became the first chronograph in 1821. Most of Rieussec’s ink chronographs are stopwatches without a time display. This is one of the few surviving genuine chronographs by him, the first genuine chronograph.
