287-4209 Pocket watch: technically interesting, early deck chronometer circa 1855, Girard & Comp.
Ca. Ø50mm, ca. 91g, silver, savonnette, dome inscribed "Observation Watch CHRONOMETER No. 41103" Girard & Comp. , duplex movement with unusual construction, jumping center seconds, flashing quarter-second "Diablotine", 2 time zones, key-winding, signed enamel dial, fine hands in gold and steel, movement intact, in urgent need of cleaning, technically highly interesting. Historically, this is also a significant watch, demonstrating that even before the founding of Girard Perregaux, this watchmaker was producing pocket watches of chronometer quality. The Swiss watchmaker Constantin Othenin Girard founded the firm Girard & Cie in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1852. In 1856, he married Marie Perregaux, the sister of the chronometer maker Henri Perregaux, and in the same year, together with his brother-in-law, founded the world-famous Girard-Perregaux manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which emerged from the firm Girard & Cie.
