287-4214 Pocket watch: extremely large Lepine Paris with repeater, Jean Antoine Lépine No. 7873, ca. 1800
Ca. Ø62mm, ca. 128g, 18K gold, dome signed and numbered, very fine Lepine calibre with diamond endstone (extremely rare) and cylinder escapement, hour and quarter-hour repeater, enamel dial, Breguet steel hands, in working order.Jean Antoine Lépine successfully completed his master’s examination in 1762 and was appointed Royal Court Watchmaker in 1766, whilst Louis XV was still on the throne. He retained this title under Louis XVI and under Napoleon. In 1770, Lépine invented the Lépine calibre, named after him: until then, movements had been fitted with solid plates, but Lépine revolutionised the pocket watch movement with his unprecedented construction: the bridge construction. In 1772, Lépine moved to the Place Dauphine. From 1778 to 1779, his shop was on the Quai de l’Horloge du Palais; from 1781, it was on the Rue des Fossés Saint Germain l’Auxerrois, near the Louvre. Alongside Breguet, Berthoud and Lepaute, Lépine is regarded as one of the most significant French watchmakers.
