Lorgnon: important museum-like lorgnon from the founding period of the company Patek Philippe, signed Czapek & Cie. No. 2470, Geneva ca. 1850
Ca.100mm long, ca. 51g, 18K gold, florally engraved and engine turned, spring lid blue enamelled, finest engine turned enamel, set with very fine Oriental pearls, under the spring lid the concealed watch, signed and numbered, time setting, adjusting and winding on the front, cylindre escapement, enamel dial in perfect condition, miniature Breguet hands, in very beautiful condition, in working order. During the founding phase of Patek Philippe the name was changed several times. Until 15th of May 1845 the company was called Patek, Czapek & Cie. After that it was split into Patek & Cie and Czapek and Cie. In the following years both companies produced a comparable range of products in a comparable quality and supplied nearly the same customer base. Mostly pocket watches and pendant watches were made. Form watches, watches integrated in a box, daggers, fans, perfume bottles and like here a lorgnon with integrated watches belong to the absolute rarities of both companies. The best known of these watches, also signed Czapek & Cie, is the so-called "Ostrich Fan Watch". A fan with an integrated miniature watch, similar to the lorgnon here, auctioned in Geneva 2011 (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/8oV). A watch in the shape of a purse Czapek & Cie. No. 3126, very similar in design, was sold for more than 30,000€ at the same auction (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/mm2).
