Pocket watch: exquisite Art Nouveau lady's lepine set with ruby baguettes, Lacloche Frères Paris, import punch London 1907
Ca. Ø27mm, ca. 14g, 18K gold, elegant thin case, case band completely set with ruby baguettes, fine lever movement, silvered original dial, Breguet steel hands, in excellent condition, in working order. Lacloche is an important name for finest Art Nouveau & Art Deco pieces: The history of Lacloche is a bit complicated because they had various companies and businesses in France and Spain dating back to 1892 before the brothers Leopold, Jacques, Jules and Fernand founded the company. The company was famous for its fabulous Art Deco jewels and pieces, which we associate with the name today. After the tragic death of Jacques in a train accident in 1900, the remaining three brothers seem to have pooled their finances in Paris to form Lacloche Freres and settled down in Rue de la Paix 15 in 1901. There they worked with some of the best designers, workshops and suppliers in Paris to establish the reputation of the name Lacloche. In 1908 Lacloche had a total of seven European shops, including Madrid and London. The business ran well and the brothers benefited quickly. At that time, beautiful jewellery and watches were produced, including a pendulum clock, the result of a cooperation between several exceptional craftsmen: Lalique, Verger, Vacheron Constantin and the enamel painter Paillet. Keeping pace with fashion trends was not only important for the business, but also for its commercial attractiveness. It is interesting to note that pieces from this period were more like the diamond and gem set designs of the time than the Art Nouveau styles. In 1917 Lacloche bought the remaining stock from Faberge's London shop.

Henry Capt, an important watchmaker from Geneva: "The company Henry Capt was founded in Geneva in 1822 by the famous Henry-Daniel Capt (1773-1841) and was very successful in business. Capt was one of the leading manufacturers and specialists for watches with additional features such as musical watches and automatons. He was one of the first in Geneva who used combs and small pinned barrels for his musical automatons. He was born as the son of Jaques Samuel Capt and Susanne Piguet in Chenit in the Vallée de Joux in April 1773. He married Henriette Piguet on 1 January 1796. Around 1789 Capt moved to Geneva and worked for some well-known companies such as Jaquet-Droz, Godet, Leschot and his brother-in-law Isaac Daniel Piguet. In 1802 Capt formed a partnership with Daniel Isaac Piguet, which lasted until 1811. After that he continued producing on his own, before entering into a partnership with Aubert et Fils in 1830. From 1844 it was continued by his son Henry Capt. In 1855 a shop was opened in the Rue du Rhône, which quickly gained an excellent reputation. In the 1870s Henry Capt promoted itself as the only watchmaker in Geneva with a branch in London. An almost identical counterpart to this watch was part of the 97th Dr. Crott auction, lot 241 (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/ELm). The name "Moulinie" goes back to a company which, as Moulinier & Bautte, produced high-quality pocket watch cases in Geneva in the last decade of the 18th century (1793-1802). From 1804 the company, now known as "Moulinier, Bautte und Cie", produced the finest pocket watches and was known from 1808 to 1821 for its high-quality timepieces. The partners separated in 1826. Bautte founded "Bautte & Moynier" and Moulinier continued his business as "Moulinier Aine & Cie." and from 1840 as "Moulinier Frères & Cie". The two almost identical watches mentioned here are of the same origin, but due to the separation of the partners with different signatures, similar to Patek and Czapek!

However, this watch is much finer and more detailed in the construction of the automaton, and the condition of the watch is of higher quality. The watch is historically important for two reasons. According to the inscription on the back the watch was a gift in memory of Julius Adolph de Lagnel. Julius Adolph de Lagnel (*24 July 1827 in Newark, New Jersey; †3 June 1912 in Washington, D.C.) was a confederate brigadier general in the American Civil War. In 1861 he retired from active military service, but joined the confederate states army as a captain after the start of the Civil War in 1861. At the battle of Rich Mountain on 11 July 1861, he was seriously wounded and rescued by a local resident. When he tried to return to his unit, dressed as a shepherd, he was captured and released in exchange on 13 December 1861. In March 1862 he became a commander of an army unit and kept this position despite his promotion to a brigadier general on 15 April 1862. After an illness in July and August 1862, he was initially incapable of fighting and worked then in the office until the end of the war. After the end of the war, de Lagnel worked for a steamboat company in the Pacific (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/2K2). 2. "Mashrak-el-Azkar" is the name of the 1st Bahai temple in the USA. The Bahai temples are the sacred buildings of the Bahai (source: Charles Mason Remey "Mashrak-El- Azkar").
