The beautiful, pastel-coloured conch pearl grows in the queen conch (pronounced ‘conk’), a large, edible sea snail. The finest specimens have a wavy ‘flame’ pattern on their surface, a creamy, porcelain-like appearance and a unique lustre. All conch pearls exhibit a unique chatoyance, which, when magnified, resembles a flame and creates a delicate wave pattern of lighter and darker areas on the pearl’s surface. This striking, silky effect is caused by the formation of microcrystalline calcite fibres in concentric layers just beneath the pearl’s surface. In the highest-quality conch pearls, this is visible to the naked eye. A combination of size, shape, colour and the flame effect determines the value.
