Horologenland is a term derived from the watchmaking trade for the northern Waldviertel region around Karlstein. What began as a sideline for long winter evenings soon gave the region of Karlstein on the German Thaya in the Waldviertel, with its castle of the same name, an unusual name: the "Horologenland" (land of horologists). In 1759, a "horologist", i.e. a watchmaker, was mentioned in the church records for the first time. Slowly but surely, the sideline developed into a separate trade with increasing production numbers. By 1830, around 280 people were already producing around 130,000 watches. Owning a watch from Karlstein was considered a luxury. Travelling salesmen sold the clocks from the Waldviertel region throughout the monarchy. But soon the wealthy customers were sufficiently supplied with timepieces and the small clock industry experienced its first crisis, whereupon the clockmaking school was founded in 1873, which soon became the "K. u. K. Fachschule für Uhrenindustrie" (Imperial and Royal Technical College for the Clock Industry), eagerly attended by clockmakers from near and far. 800 € - 1.500 €
