287-4200 Table clock: an absolute rarity, a so-called "Flintlock Alarm Clock", flintlock alarm clock circa 1730, Hennrich Christian Gunckel, Berlin Ca. 18 x 10 cm, copper, formerly gilt, verge movement with 2 barrels and alarm, dial mounting, single-hand, iron hands. When the alarm is triggered, the flintlock strikes the fuse on demand, igniting the candle placed inside the case, which shoots out upon ignition. 287-4220 Wall clock: significant precision second-pendulum clock, circa 1875, J. Wirén, St Petersburg/presumably Pulkovo Observatory Case ca. 150 x 40 cm, brass/wood with glazed front, heavy brass suspension, precision lever movement with heavy seconds pendulum and fine adjustment, Graham escapement, weight drive, signed regulator dial, intact. Johan Wirén was a renowned mechanic and clockmaker in St Petersburg, best known for his astronomical and scientific precision instruments. His second-pendulum clocks were often used as time standards in observatories, institutes or for maritime purposes, as they exhibited extremely high accuracy. Wirén worked during an era when St Petersburg was a centre for precision engineering within the Russian Empire. His workshop supplied instruments that could compete in quality with the major European manufacturers such as Riefler or Strasser & Rohde. (Source: German Society for Chronometry e.V.). "Wirén, Johan, born in 1835 near Helsinki, died in 1885 in St Petersburg, where he also lived and worked. Göring, Reich Minister of Aviation, 1935 Both original boxes with original Lange & Söhne No. 663 label, carrying case with strap, ca. 23.5 x 23.5 x 19 cm, inner case with sliding lid and glass cover, NO gimbal suspension, but fixed brass case, case with Lange & Söhne hallmark and serial number 663, spring detent chronometer with helical hairspring, No. 663, silvered dial with power reserve indicator No. 663, gold hands, with movement intact, extremely rare. The chronometer is supplied with an extract from the archives. It is one of 9 special chronometers without a gimbal suspension, commissioned by Hermann Göring, Commander-in-Chief of the German Air Force. Hermann Göring was Reich Minister of Aviation from 1933 to 1945 and, from 1935, Commander-in-Chief of the German Air Force. In these roles, he oversaw the development and deployment of the Luftwaffe during the Second World War, before being replaced by Robert von Greim shortly before the end of the war. To our knowledge, only two of these nine chronometers have resurfaced to date: number 659 and the chronometer presented here, number 663! 8.000 € - 15.000 €
