Sold 255-4245 Glashütte school watch, escapement model of a Glashütte Ankerchronometer with helical hairspring, Emil Reichard - German Watchmaking School Glashütte 1928/1929 Round wooden base, ca. Ø20cm, glass dome, full plate movement, Glashütte lever escapement, intact. The watchmaker Emil Reichard from Wesermünde attended the German watchmaking school in Glashütte from 1926 to 1929. His large talent was obvious from the start, so that he was awarded a tuition fee exemption by the Georg Jacob Jubilee Foundation's in 1928 - a great honour, "it is only awarded to well qualified students or members who are entitled to become valuable forces for the watchmaking branch". On the original graduation certificate with very good grades are the signatures of the large Glashütte teachers Helwig, Giebel and Rommershausen. Regarding the practical work, it states: "Apart from the usual course work, he made the following from the raw materials himself: 1 Lever escapement model No. 3439, [...], 1 Glashütte lever watch No. 3492 [...], 1 Table chronometer No. 3605, size 53 mm with two-spring barrel for motion and escapement." Sold 255-4258 Table clock: museum-like astronomical Baroque table clock with striking mechanism, Mattias Heidrich Hamburg 1676 Ca. 13.5 × 8.5 × 11.5cm, exceptional case quality, silver/ gold, extremely elaborate and filigree work, wooden base, this is inscribed "Mattias Heidrich Hambourg 1676", hinged on the back, full plate movement with striking mechanism on bell, short pendulum, plate also signed, champlevé dial with extremely early day/ night sun/ moon complication, single-handed, intact, cleaning recommended. This clock is a museum piece. It is the earliest German clock with this complication, possibly even the earliest ever. Provenance: 1. Collection "Au Vieux Cadran" of Raymond Laforêt, Paris; 2. 255-4348 Museum-quality, important, complicated Renaissance coach clock in book form, Hans Schnier Speir 1583 Ca. 15 × 10 × 6 cm, fire-gilded, case in the shape of a magnificent book, sound holes on both sides, all corners decorated with monkey heads (2 decorations missing), back signed and dated Opera 1583, iron movement, bristle regulator, self-strike and alarm, magnificently engraved dial with a representation of a king's portrait, on the other side a portrait of a knight, iron hand, intact and, for such an early Renaissance clock, incredibly well preserved. The eyelet at the top of the case is a sign that the clock was used as a travel clock/coach clock. However, it could also have been used as a standing table clock in book form. Provenance: Norman Shaw Collection, later Percy Webster Collection, auctioned at Sotheby's 1954. The original catalogue from the 1954 auction, where the clock is illustrated and described, is also included. This clock is one of the rarest surviving Renaissance table clocks from the 16th century, probably formerly in the possession of King Rudolf II. Hans Schnier was one of the most important watchmakers of the 16th century. His watches can be found in the most important collections and museums, e.g. Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. Sold 255-4364 Navigation watch: Longines rarity, siderograph "Aero" Marine Nationale Aeronotique Navale with double split-seconds, Nr.6425246, Ref.6081, ca. 1939/40 Ca. Ø94mm, ca. 545g, aluminium/steel case, screwed, back completely signed and numbered, high end precision calibre 21.29, signed silvered and numbered two-coloured dial, power reserve indicator, 3 central seconds hands, 2 of them with split-seconds, in working order and in very good condition, absolute rarity. The sister watch 6425248 was auctioned in Geneva in 2004 and sold for 28,680 Swiss Francs (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/Z8B). A siderograph is a combination of watch and navigation instrument and keeps a reference time corresponding to the time at 0° Greenwich longitude. This precision instrument was stored in a wooden box, which centrally contained an aluminium plate with 5 springs that holds the measuring instrument in a suspended position. The holes for attaching the springs are located on the bottom of the case. The Longines siderograph was originally developed in 1938 to help with aircraft navigation. The instrument measures Greenwich sidereal and local time in hour angles, minutes and angular minutes. Its accuracy and precision made the siderograph the measure of all things in marine chronometry. It allowed the navigator to operate at night in the same way as during the day, far surpassing the systems of Weems and Lindbergh, as both depended on the time signals. The siderographs were equipped with the 2129 chronometer calibre, which was the most precise movement Longines possessed at the time. In addition, a split-seconds and an anti-magnetic beryllium lever were integrated and the movement was fitted into a hardened aluminium case. This material was perfectly suitable for aeronautical and maritime purposes due to its weight and non-iron character. Versions were available with one and (extremely rare) as here with two split-seconds! Hammerprice: 6.500 €

Sold 255-4373 Sextant: historically highly interesting sextant from the possession of Captain J.C Leach, tested in Kew in 1940 Original wooden case with owner's label Leach, approx. 26 x 26 cm, inside the test result of the test at Kew Observatory 1940, manufacturer's signature Cary London, also owner's signature of Captain John Catteral Leach, very beautiful original condition, maritime rarity. Captain John Catterall Leach, DSO, MVO (1 September 1894 - 10 December 1941) was a British naval officer. He was the only captain of the battleship HMS Prince of Wales during his short period of service. Very soon after the Prince of Wales entered active service in 1941, the ship fought under Leach's command in the Battle of the Denmark Strait and suffered heavy damage in action against the German battleship Bismarck. Despite a proposal that Leach be court-martialled for abandoning the battle with the Bismarck after the sinking of the Hood, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his role. In the film ‘Sink the Bismarck!‘ from 1960, Leach was played by the actor Esmond Knight. Hammerprice: 1.100 €

A chronometer by Earnshaw of a comparable size, but with a one-day movement, is located in the Science Museum in London. This piece shows a beautiful example of the suspension and the former wooden case (https://www.cortrie.de/go/D44). Another example is in the British Museum in London, but this is a one-day chronometer (https://www.cortrie.de/go/JBe). These small, early chronometers by Thomas Earnshaw hardly ever come up for sale and are highly sought after.
