In his notes from 1801, Louis Berthoud wrote that he was now beginning to manufacture his second series of seven marine chronometers, starting with No. 74 and ending with No. 80. Compared to the first series from 1800, there were to be qualitative changes that allowed more space for the escapement unit and the large chronometer balance. The first series also consisted of 7 chronometers. This is therefore one of the first 14 marine chronometers/expedition chronometers by Louis Berthoud. Louis Berthoud produced ca. 150 chronometers, worked as a watchmaker for the observatory and the navy, and was a member of the ‘Bureau des Longitudes’. After his death, Breguet took over the post of ‘Horloger de la Marine’. A chronometer from the first series, No. 52, was auctioned in 2025 for a record price of over 400,000 Swiss francs (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Pq1).
