Sold 208-4172 Drum clock: museum-like German Renaissance drum clock, one of the smallest known clocks in the world and one of the earliest wearable clocks, ca. 1500-1550 Ca. Ø53mm, ca. 43mm high, brass, originally fire-gilded, 3 ball feet, bottom plate and sides florally decorated, dial with representation of a wind rose, 12 touch knobs for night reading, movement completely made of iron, verge escapement, foliot, driven by gut string, iron hand, possibly original key. Even though this clock has certainly been repaired and restored over the centuries, it is in an exceptionally good condition. In addition, it even still starts ticking when you wind it up. This is museum-quality condition for clocks of this period. With a diameter of only 53mm, this is one of the smallest known Renaissance drum clocks. An almost matching example was in the famous Sandberg collection and was auctioned in Geneva in 2001 (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/aNo). Sold 197-4333 Chronometer/ deck watch: rarity, important German expedition chronometer, ca. 1840, Kessels Altona (Hamburg) No.1313 Mahogany box ca. 11.5 × 11.5 × 6cm, bottom with winding mechanism, brass case with lateral screwed bezel, original key with matching number, very fine early chronometer movement with rare fine adjusting device, signed original dial with large seconds scale and 54 hour power reserve indicator, blued Breguet steel hands, in working order and in beautiful condition, the handles of the box are missing. The chronometer 1313 is mentioned in the "Astronomische Nachrichten" of 1842. Expedition chronometers by Kessels are absolute rarities and are almost never offered. The watchmaker Kessels originated from Maastricht and came to Altona at the beginning of the 19th century, where he had his workshop and flat in the Kleine Mühlenstraße. When the astronomer Schumacher moved to Altona in 1821, he established the Altona Observatory and published the Astronomische Nachrichten. With Kessels soon developed close relations. Probably also because the language talented Schumacher was able to give the still French speaking Kessels a hand (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/1DG). Kessels, who was born on 15.05.1781 in Maastrich, the Netherlands, and died of cholera on 15.07.1849 in Claverhem near Bristol. He was one of the most important chronometer makers working in Germany even if he was not the most famous from the early days. Altona belonged to Denmark at that time, but in the understanding of the Germans it is a German town and therefore he is listed in the literature as a German watchmaker. After stays in London and Copenhagen he worked in Paris with Abraham Breguet and Winnerl and then settled in Altona, where he became self-employed. He quickly became famous as a chronometer maker for the Danish Navy. In addition to ship chronometers, he also made pocket chronometers and astronomical pendulum clocks. Hammerprice: 33.426,00 €

Sold 145-4246 Precision watch: extremely rare Longines "Siderograph" no. 5789285 with original certificates and user guide, delivered to the German Wehrmacht 1943 Ca. 155 x 153 x 102 mm, mahogany box, aluminium case with external control unit, 2/3 mainplate, split-seconds chronograph, fine adjusting device, glucydur balance and glucydur lever, silvered dial, original hands, condition like new, real rarity, with certificate and user guide. Very precise and special Longines watch for astronomic navigation with degree graduation, rare edition with gimbal suspension. A combarable Siderograph but with "normal" suspension was sold for more than 26,000 SwissFrancs in 2004. According to our knowledge no other siderograph with gimbal suspension was ever offered in auction. Invented by Longines in 1938, the Siderograph measures Greenwich (0 longitude) Sidereal or Civil Time in hour angles, minutes and minutes of arc, and can be considered the final evolution of the marine chronometer as well as the angle hour watch. These timepieces allow the user to navigate at night as well as during the daylight hours more accurately than the Weems and Lindberg systems for nocturnal navigation that were heavily reliant on radio time signals. The Siderographs were based on the chronometer calibre 21.29 which was at the time Longiness most accurate movement. The caliber was modified with the addition of the split-seconds mechanisms and anti-magnetic beryllium pallet fork. The movement was then cased in a heat-toughened aluminum case. This material was chosen due to the fact it is a non-magnetic, light, non-ferrous material perfectly suited for use for use in both aeronautic and maritime applications. The present lot is one of a handful of examples known to exist in a gimballed deck box, an indication it was intended for navigational use aboard a ship. Hammerprice: 24.760,00 €

Sold 267-4333 Table clock: important, horizontal Renaissance table clock “The Rape of the Sabine Women”, c. 1570/1580 Ca. 12 × 12 × 8cm, square, gilt brass case on four feet, base plate engraved with a portrait of a nobleman, base plate with three winding openings for three barrels, self-striking, alarm mechanism missing, full plate movement engraved with cherub heads, verge escapement, fire-gilt dial, single-handed. The special feature of this clock is the side relief made of solid silver, which depicts scenes from Roman mythology in great detail and is of the highest artistic quality. In those scenes, the men of Rome carry out a mass abduction of young women from the Sabine people. An incised engraving on the inside of the base could refer to the Nuremberg clockmaker Reimann, who is mentioned around 1580. Provenance: Sotheby's Auctions, table clocks from this period with relief cases are extremely rare and are museum-quality collector's items. At their anniversary auction, Dr. Crott sold a comparable horizontal relief table clock by the Augsburg master from around 1580 for a record price of € 169,000 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/0M3). Sold 227-4308 Important marine chronometer/box chronometer "Grosse Montre Marine No.3658" Breguet 1820-1830 Round brass case, ca. Ø85mm, in a later made mahogany box, very fine detent chronometer "Horloge Marine à 2 barillets" Breguet No.3658 with shock absorber and transport safety for the wheel, signed and numbered dial with large seconds indication, steel hands, in almost like new condition, in working order. According to the information from Breguet which we have this chronometer was still in the possession of the Breguet Fils company in 1859 and was never sold. In the archives the start of the construction period is in 1820 and the completion in 1830. Sold 208-4148 Travel clock: Important travel clock with "Dent's staple balance", detent chronometer escapement, Dent London No.20794, ca. 1850-1860 Ca. 18 × 10 × 7.5cm (including carrying handle), gilt, glazed case, full plate movement, plate on the back signed Dent London No. 20794, winding by chain/fusee, extremely rare chronometer balance, so-called Dent's Staple Balance, helical hairspring, diamond endstone, detent chronometer, 8-day movement, signed enamel dial in very good condition, seconds scale, blued steel hands, in working order. In our opinion, this extremely rare chronometer is in rare condition. Only the transport box, while exactly matching and of the period, is probably not by Dent. These chronometers are of the finest quality and extremely rare. The last Dent chronometer with Dent's staple balance known to us was part of the special auction "George Daniel's extraordinary collection" and sold for ca 75,000€ in London. The chronometer came from an important collection that included 3 of these chronometers and was auctioned in Geneva in 1995. Sold 208-4173 Wall clock: important and unique early wall clock with extremely rare astronomical displays, early "perpetual" calendar, calendar of saints and moon phase, probably Augsburg 16th/17th century Ca. 32 × 24cm, metal case, very early verge movement with pillars, front pendulum, oversized dial with early "perpetual calendar" and calendar of saints, above the dial the extraordinary moon phase display in the form of a rotating moon, single-handed, especially beautiful iron hand, tip and end brass, the end with representation of a city view with many towers. The second iron hand is the calendar hand with the extremely rare function, it makes only one revolution the whole year. All 365 days are inscribed with the corresponding saint's name. This type of calendar is known so far only from church clocks/ tower clocks from the 16th century, e.g. at St. Mary's Church in Rostock and from Strasbourg Cathedral, where the clock was made in the period 1547-1574. According to our research, no other 16th century wall clock with this astronomical function is known to date, a true museum rarity. According to the owner, the clock comes from the Augsburg area. A copy of the extract from the archives is included. The extract from the archives confirms both numbers 229564/370698 and the originality. The chronometer was sold in 1915. Antiquorum in Geneva sold 1 more of these extremely small chronometers, number 388127, for 87,400 Swiss Francs. According to research by Antiquorum in 1992, Vacheron & Constantin confirmed that only 3 of these extremely small chronometers were built. Sold 246-4179 Table clock: museum-quality, extremely early horizontal clock with self strike and alarm, Jacob Widmann Augusta 1603-1664 Ca. 13 x 13 cm, square case on 4 feet, 4 oval windows on the sides, floral decoration on the face, hinged bottom, 2 bells, signed verge movement with self strike and alarm, extremely rare original dial with coloured enamel inlays and black enamelled numerals, probably original hands, intact, Augsburg museum clock. In our opinion, this clock was probably made around 1630/1640 and is still largely in its original condition. Like many of these clocks, a hairspring was added to this clock around 1700. According to Abeler, Jacob Widmann signed his name with various variations, e.g. Wiedemann, Weidemann etc. Horizontal table clocks from the period before 1650 are important collector's items for museums and only very rarely come onto the market. Sold 287-4200 Table clock: an absolute rarity, a so-called "Flintlock Alarm Clock", flintlock alarm clock circa 1730, Hennrich Christian Gunckel, Berlin Ca. 18 x 10 cm, copper, formerly gilt, verge movement with 2 barrels and alarm, dial mounting, single-hand, iron hands. When the alarm is triggered, the flintlock strikes the fuse on demand, igniting the candle placed inside the case, which shoots out upon ignition.
