292-4313 Fragment of an early single-hand Renaissance turret clock with hour strike, Brenner, Copenhagen 1563 Ca. 21 cm high, fire-gilt, case decorated with scenes based on Virgilius Solis’s series of copperplate engravings depicting the nine heroines and heroes of history; case: bronze, fire-gilt, engraved, 1 hammer / 1 bell. Dial: superimposed brass numeral ring with Roman numerals ‘I–XII’ and inner 24-hour scale with Arabic numerals, as well as push-buttons for night-time reading, engraved centre, blued iron hands. Movement: iron frame, iron and brass gear train, later chain/fusee for the walking mechanism, good string/fusee for the striking mechanism; verge escapement and spoon-shaped escape wheel are missing; incomplete, in need of restoration. A stepped, black ebonised hardwood plinth from a later period, with four pressed, gilt ball feet, serves as the base. The two-part, telescopic case features a square, moulded plinth with contemporary scrollwork engravings. On the front, alongside the engraving of the year 1563, are Stephan Brenner’s initials ‘SB’ and the coat of arms of Copenhagen. A coat of arms bearing the initials ‘OB’ in the centre of the hour dial indicates the watch’s first owner. The three sides feature engravings from the series of copperplate engravings ‘The Nine Heroines and Heroes of History’ by the Nuremberg copperplate engraver and draughtsman Virgilius Solis (1514–1562): On the right, Judas Maccabeus, the Jewish freedom fighter of the 2nd century BC; on the reverse, St Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine; and on the left, Jael, who killed an enemy of the people of Israel with a blacksmith’s hammer and a tent peg. According to Abeler’s *Meister der Uhrmacherkunst* (*Master of the Art of Watchmaking*), Stephan Brenner was probably a German watchmaker. He moved to Copenhagen in 1554 and became the court watchmaker there. He collaborated with Johan Sibe, for example on an astronomical clock dated 1556. Works by Brenner from the years 1556, 1561, 1576 and 1598 are held at the National Museum in Copenhagen. Further clocks dated between 1558 and 1597 are held in major museums and private collections both within and outside Denmark. Maker’s mark ‘SB’. 292-4314 Table clock: significant, large, early Renaissance turret clock with 3 complications, iron movement, dated c. 1580 Ca. 53 cm high, brass and copper, gilt, tower-shaped, architecturally designed case with openwork domed belfry and galleries, topped by a figure in the form of a knight (added later), on the front a mounted striding lion, very early iron movement with verge escapement, on the back, a short pendulum, 3 mainspring barrels with winding at the front and on both sides, 3 dials: the front features a time display (single-hand), the sides feature an alarm scale and a striking mechanism scale, repeater, self-striking mechanism and alarm, iron hands; the movement starts and strikes loudly and clearly; adjustment and overhaul urgently required. This is a particularly early and particularly impressive example of a Renaissance turret clock, the likes of which are now very rarely seen on the market. Like almost all clocks from this period, it has undergone various restorations over the course of five centuries. A comparable turret clock achieved 42,000 Swiss francs at Koller in Switzerland. 10.000 € - 50.000 €

292-4315 Table clock: extremely rare Renaissance figure clock ‘Mary with the Infant Jesus’, ca. 1620, monogram ANR (Nikolaus Rugendas) Ca. 32 cm high, brass, fire-gilt, glazed wooden base, base bell, early verge movement with self-striking mechanism on the bell, monogram ANR (Nikolaus Rugendas of Augsburg), time displayed via a rotating crown, modernised from a gut string to a chain drive, movement intact. Please request a condition report for technical details. Nikolaus Rugendas was born in 1582 in Melsungen (Hesse). He moved to Augsburg in 1608 and was appointed a master there in 1610. He was a recognised master watchmaker and was also fortunate enough to marry into wealth when he wed Sarah Schmidt in 1608. In 1638/1639, he was appointed and sworn in as a master watchmaker. This clock, known as the ‘Strahlenkranzmadonna’, was on loan as part of two exhibitions in Munich and Washington in 1980–81: in 1980 at the Bavarian National Museum in the exhibition ‘Die Welt als Uhr’ (‘The World as a Clock’) and at the National Museum of American History and Technology (Smithsonian Institution) in the exhibition ‘The Clockwork Universe’. Both museums enjoyed great success with these exhibitions; in Munich alone, there were more than 82,000 visitors. A catalogue of the same name, edited by Klaus Maurice and Otto Mayr, was published to accompany the exhibition; in it, the ‘Madonna statuette’ is illustrated and described as an exhibit on pages 238 and 239. 18.000 € - 35.000 €

Dial: silver, with polychrome cloisonné enamel inlays, inlaid Roman and Arabic numerals, iron hands. Movement: brass and iron movement, stamped master’s mark ‘MD’ within the coat of arms, profiled, stepped iron pillars, brass gear train, verge escapement, brass wheel detent, lock disc, going train with gut string and fusee, additional barrel for striking mechanism, strikes a bell, movement intact. The automaton: The figure of the lion is crafted from fire-gilt bronze. When the hour strike is triggered, a mechanism is set in motion: the lion moves its eyes in time with the balance wheel and opens its mouth in synchronisation with the strike. Provenance: Private collection, USA; sold at the 79th Dr Crott auction for ca. €90,000. This is one of the most significant and rarest Renaissance table clocks. An identical sister clock fetched 174,000 Swiss francs at Koller in Zurich. A total of just four such clocks are known to exist! 292-4317 Drum clock: one of the earliest known carriage clocks with original alarm attachment, Peter Pech, Munich, c. 1540 Ca. 60 mm in diameter, gilted brass, magnificently engraved, top with recess for securing the alarm attachment, push-buttons, single-hand, movement entirely made of iron, alarm movement also made of iron, bell, balance bristles missing, movement intact, extremely rare. Tin clocks from the first half of the 16th century are museum-quality collector’s items. They are generally extremely rare and command high prices. Examples where the original alarm attachment is still present almost never come onto the market. Sewill, Liverpool, corrected by H. Frodsham No. 219, steel hands, with the movement intact, circa 1840. Joseph Sewill, of Liverpool (Lancashire), was a prominent chronometer maker and ‘Maker to the Admiralty’. 292-4387 Travel clock: significant, museum-quality, complicated Japy Frères travel clock with songbird automaton, c. 1870 Ca. 30 cm high, with carrying handle, bronze, fire-gilt, signed and numbered movement, Japy Frères No. 4529, self-striking and repeater on bell; housed in the base is the movement for the automaton, which activates on the hour and on demand (by operating the lever in the base plate), enamelled dial, steel hands, extremely rare. The bird and its decoration are still in their original condition. The automaton activates, causing the bird to turn back and forth, but no sound is produced as the bellows are damaged. The striking mechanism also activates; the movement and the automaton require overhaul. The watch has not been used for decades and therefore requires general restoration. According to Antiquorum Geneva, only a ‘handful’ of these automatic travel watches are known to exist and are still in working order today; for example, one was auctioned in Geneva in 2012 for 62,500 Swiss francs (https://www.cortrie.de/go/vN5). 10.000 € - 30.000 €
