292-4104 Pocket watch: fine double-cased cylinder watch by John Ellicott, London, No. 7073, hallmarks 1781
Ca. Ø50mm, ca. 113g, protective case covered in stingray skin, inner case 18K, London hallmarks 1781, signed dome bearing the same number, exquisite, signed cylinder movement with diamond endstone, enamel dial, steel hands, movement intact, but in urgent need of cleaning. John Ellicott (Jr.) initially ran his business on Austin Friars Street, EC2, and later in Swithin’s Alley at the Royal Exchange. In 1738, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He took a keen interest in scientific matters and maintained an observatory at his home in Hackney. He became best known for his work on temperature-compensated pendulums and the use of the cylinder escapement. The high quality of his craftsmanship led to his appointment as clockmaker to King George III.
