Explanation: On 29 August 1929, Captain Wilhelm Gerels rescued the crew of a Russian military vessel that had suffered shipwreck. As a token of gratitude, he was presented with this gold pocket watch by the manufacturer P. Moser. Charles Haley of Wigmore Street began working in 1762 (when he entered apprenticeship with Brockbank), became a full member of the Watchmakers’ Guild in 1781 and died in 1823. He became a famous London watchmaker and inventor. He invented a constant-force escapement and was known for having produced many fine watches with various escapements (patent holder of a special escapement for marine chronometers). He was also one of the experts commissioned by the House of Commons Select Committee to report on Mudge’s chronometer. 3.000 € - 7.000 €

A technically comparable, signed gold example with the number 1073 was sold for ca. 19,500 Swiss francs in Geneva. Charles Cabrier, a Frenchman who emigrated to England following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was a watchmaker in London from 1697 to 1724. He became a member of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1698. Very well-preserved examples of his watches are still found in various collections. He is regarded as a significant English watchmaker around 1700. 4.500 € - 8.500 €

Ø56mm, ca. 199g, heavy double case in silver (the protective case’s end ring is missing), outer case in repoussé, inner case pierced, rim featuring an angel and various animals, extremely rare, early verge movement, manufactured in a very special construction style; the movement plates are not pinned as usual, but are held in place by two iron rings with two screws; if these screws are removed, the movement can be taken apart (absolutely rare and hardly known), Plate signed, very early hairspring, stepped vase-shaped pillars, pierced barrels, alarm on bell, original dial, iron hands, gold alarm hand, movement intact, extremely rare. Yver à Angouleme/Abraham Yver (Hyver or Yuer, 1620–1680) was the head of one of the most influential watchmaking families in northern France. In the ‘Memoire sur la Généralité de Limoges’, published in 1698, one can read that the Yver family from Angoulême enjoyed the highest esteem among the kings and in the towns of Saintes, Blois, Poitiers and other towns. All members of the family were Protestants and there were connections to watchmakers in Blois. As a Huguenot family, the Yver watchmakers, who originated from France, were forced to flee to Amsterdam at the end of the 17th century. Tardy’s records state that Yver’s “watches enjoyed a good reputation throughout the Kingdom of France”. In our 255th auction, we sold a gold watch with alarm and self-striking mechanism by Yver for a record price of €68,000.
