The manufacturer Armand Schwob & Frères in La Chaux-de-Fonds brought this curious pocket watch onto the market around 1888 and had it patented under the name Mysterieuse. Almost all examples had silver cases. Only a few were made in gold for special customers. This example was delivered to Cuba, as the small owner engraving in the cartouche reveals. As the company Armand Schwob & Frères went bankrupt in 1892, these watches were only produced for a period of 3 years and are therefore very rare. 1.800 € - 2.800 €

Provenance: Christies Geneva 2005 This treasure is a mystery. The case is one of the most precious pocket watch cases from the 19th century known. The diamond setting of approx. 15-20 ct shows that this pocket watch was made for a very special and, above all, wealthy customer, most probably for the Russian market. This watch was then modernised in the 20th century, possibly by Cartier. It is very likely that the watch also received the black enamelling on the inside at this time and that the pendant was converted to crown winding. 10.000 € - 25.000 €

The accompanying chatelaine is also of exceptional quality, also gold, the centrepiece and pendant decorated with white enamel pearls in the same way as the watch case, as well as a gold/enamel watch key of large rarity and an equally rare pendant with a fold-out hook, a so-called bedhook. This version is a museum rarity. Gold/enamelled verge watches with matching chatelaine are generally rare collector's items, especially if they also have a striking mechanism. Extremely rare and only for very special customers such as royalty or the Tsar's court, these watches were set with real diamonds and not the usual imitations. Provenance: Geneva "Important Timepieces" (https://www.cortrie.de/go/bl2). Gregson was of British origin and watchmaker to the King. He must have been considered one of the best among his contemporaries, as he was appointed to the commission of the Royal Watch Manufactory in 1786. Only three other watchmakers were represented on this commission: Breguet, Berthoud and Lepaute. Today, Gregson's outstanding enamel watches are among the most valuable collector's items in this field. Even though the dome of this rare watch is signed "Breguet", this signature was probably only intended to promote sales. These extremely precious pocket watches, which are completely set with Oriental pearls, are absolute rarities. Some of them are signed Bautte & Moynier, the important manufacturer who produced these watches mainly for export to China and the Orient. Of these very few known examples, watches with repeaters are naturally the rarest. One of these watches is in the Patek Philippe Museum and another is in the Girard Perregaux Museum. This exceptionally large astronomical pocket watch was made by Pierre Caillatte from Heidelberg. The watchmaking family first worked in Geneva in the 17th century, later also in Copenhagen. Around 1700, this watch was modernised, see movement decoration, conversion from gut string to chain and fitting with a hairspring. The "pocket watch with pedometer" was developed by Ralph Gout and was usable as a pedometer when riding. The base plate is attached to the saddle. The watch itself swings up and down when the horse moves and registers the number of steps. The patent was registered under number 2351 on 4.11.1799. These watches are in principle extremely rare, including, according to our research, fewer than 10 known examples with the pedometer case still in place. The condition of this pedometer is museum quality! Henri Duphot, born on 1 August 1810 in Bordeaux and died on 23 November 1889 in the same town, was a well-known French architect. He was appointed architect to the city of Bordeaux in 1849. In 1838, he married his cousin, Élisabeth Cécile Marrault (1813-1874), the granddaughter of the wealthy merchant and Hamburg consul Daniel-Christophe Meyer. This enabled him to build up relationships and a client network among the local bourgeoisie, which brought him private commissions. Charles-Ami Barbezat-Baillot was born on 6 March 1847 as the son of Charles Henri Barbezat (1809-1889) in Bayards (Neuchâtel). Barbezat-Baillot was an ingenious watchmaker and inventor and registered a large number of patents. Swiss patent 334 was one of Barbezat-Baillot's most important inventions and involved the use of centrifugal force in the repeating mechanism. On 4 March 1879, US patent no. 212,882 (patent for a calendar watch) was granted. 1880 Gold medal in Groningen. July 1881 also a gold medal in La Chaux-de-Fonds at the National Watch Exhibition for various pocket watches with calendars. At the Colonial and Export Exhibition in Amsterdam ("Internationale Koloniale en Untvoerhandel Tentoonstellung" 01.05. - 01.11.1883), one of two Large Diplomas of Honour for Swiss exhibitors was awarded - the second was given to Patek Philippe & Co. At the exhibition in Paris in 1889, Charles Barbezat-Baillot was awarded a gold medal for the high quality of his movements. In 1896, he received another gold medal at the National Exhibition in Geneva. The calendar movement also shows signs of repair. Nevertheless, this movement is extremely rare and unknown to us. According to the consignor, the watch belonged to a Russian Freemason/Masonic who emigrated to the USA. This chronometer is very interesting because it is signed by an important French chronometer maker in Paris, but the construction is completely English and the case has London hallmarks as well. It can therefore be assumed that the chronometer was made in England on behalf of Poitevin. Bernard Poitevin worked as a Parisian watch and chronometer maker between 1850 and 1900. He founded the company B. Poitevin & V. Lejeune. His shop was located in Rue Richelieu (1850) and Rue Vivienne 22 (1860-1900). Justin Vulliamy (*1712 in Switzerland; †1797 in England) was a well-known watchmaker. In 1730 he emigrated to England and studied watchmaking under Benjamin Gray. He later married Gray's daughter Mary and worked with him in his watch manufactory in London's Pall Mall. His son Benjamin Vulliamy (1747-1811) also became a watchmaker and took over the professional management of the Vulliamy & Sons watch manufactory from 1775. Around 1801, Benjamin Vulliamy took on his son Benjamin Lewis as a partner. His large talent was obvious from the start, so that he was awarded a tuition fee exemption by the Georg Jacob Jubilee Foundation's in 1928 - a great honour, "it is only awarded to well qualified students or members who are entitled to become valuable forces for the watchmaking branch". On the original graduation certificate with very good grades are the signatures of the large Glashütte teachers Helwig, Giebel and Rommershausen. This movement with a direct "diablotine" mechanism was invented by Ami LeCoultre from Le Brassus in Switzerland and is based on his patent no. 355403 of January 4, 1887. Ami LeCoultre Charles Ami Lecoultre (1843-1921) began his career in Le Brassus with the manufacture of complicated watches. In 1878, he exhibited a highly complicated watch at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, which became known as "La Merveilleuse" and is now on display at the Musee International d'Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The upper pusher resets the seconds hand to zero and simultaneously activates the crown. When the crown is pushed back in, the watch starts again. The dial has a wonderful brown colouring due to ageing, so-called tropical dial, original luminous hands, textile military strap, in very beautiful original condition, in working order. The so-called TG 195 is one of the rarest military watches of the Lemania brand. Not much is known about this watch. It was procured for the Swedish Air Force in the 1950s. The special feature is a rather unusual zero setting of the watch for precise adjustment. During operation, the centre seconds is permanently moving. If you press the upper pusher at 2, the seconds automatically reset to zero and the crown springs out. However, the entire movement stops as planned (!).
