Sold 292-4165 Pocket watch: unique, early gold hunting case pocket watch with repeater, a rarity from the early days of Patek Philippe, Patek & Cie. No. 10296, Geneva ca. 1855, with presumably original box and original key Ca. Ø47mm, ca. 56g, 18K gold, magnificently engraved, very early savonnette case, spring lid featuring a finely chased depiction of a general in uniform, presumably the Polish national hero General Tadeusz Kościuszko; on the reverse, a highly detailed depiction of the general on horseback against a military scene in the background; dome signed and numbered, magnificently engraved with rocaille motifs, No. 10296, Case and movement bear the same number; exquisite early Patek Philippe lever movement with temperature compensation and shock protection; hour and quarter-hour repeater; a very beautiful enamelled dial and the finest Breguet gold hands; in working order and in a very fine state of preservation. The watch is housed in a box from the Türler firm in Zurich, which was presumably the seller. The box contains what is presumably the original cross-shaped gold key. The watch is a museum-quality collector’s piece and is one of the earliest known Patek Philippe hunting case pocket watches with a repeater, presumably made for a wealthy Polish client. At Antiquorum auctions in Geneva in 2004, another Patek Philippe hunting case pocket watch with a very similar case and extract from the archives was sold at auction. According to the register extract, the case depicted the scene ‘The Death of Poniatowski’ on one side and Tadeusz Kościuszko on horseback on the other. Pierre Le Roy (born 1717 in Paris; died 1785 in Vitry-sur-Seine) was one of the most important[1] French watchmakers and inventors. Together with Ferdinand Berthoud, Le Roy was a pioneer in the development of chronometer escapements. He devised a system of temperature compensation using a bimetallic balance wheel with adjustable mass screws and an isochronous balance spring. His developments laid the foundations for today’s mechanical chronometers. Le Roy was born in Paris, the son of Julien Le Roy (1686–1759), who was the court watchmaker to Louis XV. Following his father’s death, Pierre Le Roy took over this role. Jean-Baptiste Baillon (de Fontenay) was a very famous watchmaker and, at the time, the wealthiest in Paris during the 18th century; he became a master watchmaker in 1727, and his shop was initially on the Place Dauphine and later on the Rue Dauphine. Baillon was watchmaker to the Queen of France, Maria Leczinska (1738) ‘Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Reine’ around 1748, ‘Premier Valet de Chambre de la Reine’, and from around 1770, watchmaker at the court of Queen Marie Antoinette, ‘Premier Valet de Chambre and Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire de la Dauphine to Marie-Antoinette’. Ferdinand Berthoud was greatly impressed at the time by Baillon’s factory and shop, by their size and outstanding quality. In 1753, Berthoud wrote of Baillon’s shop: “It is currently the finest and most opulent watch shop”. “Diamonds were used not only on pocket watches, but even on grand clocks.” Examples of his work can be found, amongst others, at the Musée des Arts et Métiers, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Château de Versailles, the Musée Paul-Dupuy in Toulouse, the Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis in Brussels, the Museo Galileo in Florence, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This is thought to be one of Tompion’s earliest watches, predating the introduction of serial numbering and the period when he began signing with his full name. 292-4258 Pocket watch: one of the earliest two-hand ‘Oignon’ watches without a fusee, ca. 1675–1680 Approx. 56 mm in diameter, ca. 114 g, gilted brass, verge movement without a fusee and with an early hairspring, signed ‘Amourette à Marseille’, early regulation, cartouche dial, iron hands, movement intact, a rarity. Watches without a fusee was only produced between 1675 and 1680. With the introduction of the balance spring, timekeeping accuracy improved considerably. It is therefore not surprising that some watchmakers believed they could dispense with the fusee. However, this assumption proved to be a mistake. Ø54mm, approx. 146g, 18-carat gold, heavy gold case, early verge movement, signed John May London, gold dial with a window at the ‘12’ position, beneath which is a rotating enamel disc featuring six paintings of figures in very fine paintings, the automaton triggered by a lever on the rim, iron hands, movement intact. Gold pocket watches with automatons are extremely rare. John May was active in London from 1692. A well-known London watchmaker (member of the Clockmakers’ Company from 1692).
