To date, watches without a fusee and with a balance spring are known only from the watchmakers listed below: Anglois/Paris, Isaac, Bidault/Salin, Boben/Toulouse, Donnet/Castre, Dupuy/Neuchâtel, Gauthier/Paris, Jacques Gloria/Rouen, Gribelin/Paris, Hanet/Paris, Jean Hubert/Rouen, Jacob/Tour, Papillion/Florence, Raillard/Paris, Thuret/Paris, Tompion/London. now only: 6.000 €

292-4267 Pocket watch: A rarity, Barillet-type musical watch, probably Geneva, circa 1820 Ca. 55 mm in diameter, ca. 106 g, 18K pink gold, No. 1951, extremely rare musical movement with barrel (barillet), cylinder escapement, quarter-hour repeater and music, playing automatically on the hour or on demand, particularly beautiful gold dial, two-tone enamelled, Breguet steel hands, movement intact and technically sound, case with minor dents. So-called ‘barillet-type’ musical watches are exceptionally rare and differ completely from the usual musical watches of that period. Sold 292-4283 Pocket watch: significant Geneva chronometer with 7 complications, B. Haas, Geneva, circa 1890 Ca. Ø54mm, ca. 150g, 18K gold, à-goutte savonnette, engine-turned, dome inscribed "CHRONOMETRE", signed B. Haas Jne & Cie No. 15333, top-quality Geneva Anker chronometer, perpetual calendar, moon phase, age of the moon and minute repeater, very well-preserved enamel dial, gold hands, in very good condition and in working order. Very few pocket watches of chronometer quality feature complications. This is because it was difficult to achieve the accuracy required of a chronometer in watches that had additional complications. Only a few manufacturers, such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron & Constantin and, indeed, B. Haas, were capable of doing so. These watches are now particularly sought-after and highly prized collector’s items! The ‘sister watch’, No. 15773, was offered for sale in Geneva in 2010 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/PoA). Ø55mm, ca. 131g, 18-carat gold, very fine painting of the 5th Shah of Persia on the front, Mozaffar ad-Din, as commander of the Persian Guard, original diamond and ruby setting; on the reverse, the Persian coat of arms featuring a lion, a sabre, a sun and a laurel wreath, the rim also beautifully enamelled, serial number 47722, dome inscribed ‘Mouvement de la Vallee’, dome also listing the complications: minute repeater and chronograph, glazed movement, highly complex Swiss precision lever movement with minute repeater and chronograph, extremely rare dial in red engine-turned enamel, gold numerals, gold hands, in working order. The watch is in a marvellous state of preservation; both paintings are original and have not been restored. The signature ‘Mouvement de la Vallee’ is an indication of the high quality for which movements from the ‘Vallee’ are renowned, such as those by Le Coultre or Louis-Elisée Piguet. This is either the personal watch of the 5th Shah of Persia or an extremely valuable gift watch. We are aware of another example with an identical case but a standard ‘white’ dial, from the Dr Crott Anniversary Auction 2015, with an estimated price of €75,000–85,000. 292-4291 Form watch: an absolute rarity, presumably the only known Patek Philippe ‘Flakon’ with an extract from the archives, 1854 Ca. 48 x 27 mm, 18K gold, blue enamel and diamonds set in silver, upper section with hinged flacon clasp, secret opening button for the lid concealed in one of the chain eyelets, numbered No. 1, opens on both sides, heart-shaped cylinder movement with key winding, signed beneath the dial, No. 9608, screw-fixed enamel dial, gold hands, original gold/enamel chatelaine with key and signet ring bearing the monogram CJ, with the movement intact, and some restoration to the enamel. The watch is a museum-quality rarity and is likely to be one of a kind. The number 1 also suggests this. We are not aware of any other flacon by Patek Philippe. The case maker is also thought to be from Geneva. The extract from the archives confirms the heart-shaped movement, manufactured in 1854. In many enamel flacon watches, the movement manufacturer and the case maker were different companies. In most cases, the movements were French or from Vienna; extremely rarely, they were from Geneva, like the prominent case makers. According to our research, there are around 10 known Patek Philippe shaped watches with heart-shaped movements, all dating from the 1850s; however, none of them was a flacon. now only: 19.000 €

292-4293 Pendant watch: important enamelled watch ‘Huaud fecit’, ca. 1685, movement by Domenicus Molenaer, Amsterdam Ca. Ø36mm, high-carat gold, fully enamelled, reverse depicting Herod, Herodias and Salome; inside, a castle with a knight; on the side, the usual four cartouches with views of the castle, which form a connection to the inner painting; signed verge movement; enamelled dial; gold hands; in unrestored original condition; fine firing cracks in the enamel; case signed ‘Huaud Le Puisné fecit’; movement intact. Many of the surviving Huaud cases from around 1685 were fitted with movements from the early and mid-18th century, as is the case with this clock. Huaud clocks with movements dating from around 1685 command extremely high prices, as the majority of these clocks have later movements; source: 1. Dutch movement from the 18th century. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/5e3). 2. Early 17th-century movement (https://www.cortrie.de/go/3eA). 292-4294 Pendant watch: a significant, unique pair of gold and enamel pendant watches, Blois 1640/1650 1. Ca. Ø 33 mm, ca. 34 g, gold, high carat, probably 20 carat, case fully enamelled, top and bottom featuring elaborate, highly detailed mythological scenes; the reverse of the bowl depicts ‘THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS’ and the lid shows the ‘ALLEGORY OF JUSTICE’. The rim of the case features four cartouches with landscape scenes. The source material consists of engravings by Michel Dorigny; the images themselves are thought to be by Simon Vouet (1590–1649). The black bezel is known only from three cases from Blois; it features a very fine, early verge movement with vase-shaped pillars, a two-arm balance wheel without a hairspring, a mainplate signed ‘Laurier Blois’, an enamelled dial and gold hands. It is in an outstanding state of preservation, with minimal cracking around the edge. François Laurier was recorded in Blois around 1650 and died in 1663. Blois enamel clocks from around 1650 with movements from that period are museum pieces. Many of these cases, which were already prized as works of art at the time, contain 18th-century movements. The clock presented here is an original from Blois dating from around 1640/50, a museum-quality collector’s item. Comparable clocks: 1. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/xqG), 2. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/N9J), 3. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Xl1). 2. Case with absolutely identical dimensions and of absolutely identical construction, ca. Ø33mm, ca. 34g, gold, high carat, presumably 20K, case fully enamelled; the top and bottom feature elaborate, highly detailed mythological scenes, whilst the inside of the case shows an idealised landscape with a farmhouse and a fisherman in the river, and the inside of the caseback depicts a riverside landscape with trees and a village in the foothills. The reverse of the bowl depicts ‘Ceres, Bacchus and Venus during the grape harvest, watched by a lynx’, whilst the lid shows the scene ‘Ceres, Bacchus and Venus celebrating wildly’. The rim of the case features four cartouches with landscape scenes. The designs are based on engravings by Michel Dorigny; the accompanying images are thought to be by Simon Vouet (1590–1649). The movement is an early verge movement with vase-shaped pillars, a two-arm balance wheel without a hairspring, a mainplate signed ‘François Berger, Paris’, an enamelled dial and iron hands; the watch is in an outstanding state of preservation. NOTE: To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known pair of Blois enamel clocks. Equally remarkable is the fact that both clocks still possess their original movements from that period; the third aspect of their extreme rarity is the size of the clocks, which differs significantly from the usual size of known Blois enamel clocks! now only: 50.000 €

Sold 292-4295 Museum-quality gold agate snuff box, a so-called ‘stone cabinet’, attributed to Johann Christian Neuber of Dresden, c. 1780 Ca. 8.5 x 6.2 x 3 cm, ca. 172 g, octagonal case, later fitted with two French import hallmarks for gold dated 1864–1893. The octagonal snuffbox is set with 60 numbered stones (a very typical feature, also found on other snuffboxes by Neuber) of semi-translucent and opaque hard stones, including a variety of dendritic and banded agates, jasper, chalcedony and others, separated by narrow gold bars. The hinged lid is set with 16 stones, each individually numbered on the gold bars on the inside of the lid. In the centre is an oval portrait cartouche beneath a domed rose quartz with a narrow blue enamel border, framed by a wide, chased and engraved frame. The base is similarly designed; the numbers 45 to 60 are engraved on the gold bars around the edge and radiate outwards from a central oval agate panel. The sides are set with 28 rectangular agate inlays set within narrow gold frames and are also numbered (17 to 44). The gold borders on the lid are geometric and engraved with ovals and flowers; the vertical bars feature a wavy pattern, and the surrounding base strip is decorated with an interlaced band motif. The box is of outstanding quality and in very good condition. Johann Christian Neubers’ precious boxes are now held in major collections and museums around the world. They possess a special allure. Both the meticulous technique of the gem-setting and the gem-cutting itself, and above all the very tasteful selection and arrangement of the stones, have long made Neuber’s boxes highly sought-after collector’s items. The Dresden court jeweller and gem-cutter Johann Christian Neuber (1736–1808) learnt the crafts of goldsmithing and gem-cutting in Dresden under his future father-in-law, Heinrich Taddel. In 1762, he was admitted to the Dresden Goldsmiths’ Guild. From 1767 he worked for the court; from 1769 he was in charge of the Green Vault; and in 1775 he was appointed court jeweller. Neuber’s works are characterised by early Classicism. His speciality was the creation of snuff boxes adorned with gold and gemstones, which were frequently presented as royal gifts. In 1781, as a token of honour from the Saxon King Friedrich August for the French diplomat Baron de Breteuil, who played a key role in bringing about the Peace of Teschen, Neuber crafted a ceremonial table, which is regarded as his masterpiece. Further octagonal ‘Steinkabinett’ snuff boxes by Johann Christian Neuber are illustrated and described in *Gold, Jasper and Carnelian: Johann Christian Neuber at the Saxon Court*, edited by Alexis Kugel, London 2012. A round ‘Steinkabinett’ snuff box is held in the Hermitage collection. If any of his works come onto the market at all, they fetch collector’s prices at auction. Information on the clockmaker: Pfündler, first name Michael (Pfaundler, Pfreundler) from Schleswig, originally from Innsbruck, took part in the Gottorf expedition to Moscow and Isfahan in 1635. Duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf also sought to find a trade route to Russia and Persia that did not go round Africa. For this reason, on 6 November 1633, he dispatched an expedition from Hamburg to Moscow. It was led by the merchant Otto Brüggemann and the ducal councillor Philipp Crusius. Adam Olearius served as secretary to the expedition, which comprised 34 people. The delegation arrived in Moscow on 14 August 1634. Although they were unable to conclude a trade agreement with Tsar Michael I, preparations for the next expedition began immediately upon the delegation’s return to Gottorf Castle on 6 April 1635. This expedition was to take them to the Persian court in Isfahan. Michael Pfündler was responsible for overseeing the expedition in his capacity as a watchmaker. Extensive details about the watchmaker and the watch in question can be found here: (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Q4M). Hammerprice: 25.000 €
