292-4267 Pocket watch: A rarity, Barillet-type musical watch, probably Geneva, circa 1820 Ca. 55 mm in diameter, ca. 106 g, 18K pink gold, No. 1951, extremely rare musical movement with barrel (barillet), cylinder escapement, quarter-hour repeater and music, playing automatically on the hour or on demand, particularly beautiful gold dial, two-tone enamelled, Breguet steel hands, movement intact and technically sound, case with minor dents. So-called ‘barillet-type’ musical watches are exceptionally rare and differ completely from the usual musical watches of that period. The musical movement is designed entirely differently, as it is a high-quality barrel movement which, due to its thickness, was unsuitable for pocket watches and was predominantly used in enamelled boxes. Only a few pocket watches with such a musical movement are known to exist and are highly sought-after collector’s items (https://www.cortrie.de/go/wVY). now only: 7.000 €

So-called ‘barillet-type’ musical clocks are exceptionally rare and differ completely from the usual musical clocks of that period. The musical mechanism is designed entirely differently, as it is a high-quality barrel mechanism which, due to its thickness, was unsuitable for pocket watches and was predominantly used in enamelled boxes. Only a few pocket watches with such a musical mechanism are known to exist and are highly sought-after collector’s items (https://www.cortrie.de/go/wVY). Hammerprice: 8.000 €

Sold 292-4283 Pocket watch: significant Geneva chronometer with 7 complications, B. Haas, Geneva, circa 1890 Ca. Ø54mm, ca. 150g, 18K gold, à-goutte savonnette, engine-turned, dome inscribed "CHRONOMETRE", signed B. Haas Jne & Cie No. 15333, top-quality Geneva Anker chronometer, perpetual calendar, moon phase, age of the moon and minute repeater, very well-preserved enamel dial, gold hands, in very good condition and in working order. Very few pocket watches of chronometer quality feature complications. This is because it was difficult to achieve the accuracy required of a chronometer in watches that had additional complications. Only a few manufacturers, such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron & Constantin and, indeed, B. Haas, were capable of doing so. These watches are now particularly sought-after and highly prized collector’s items! The ‘sister watch’, No. 15773, was offered for sale in Geneva in 2010 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/PoA). Another of these watches, No. 15849, even exceeded the upper estimate of CHF 55,000 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/7Z6). Hammerprice: 21.000 €

292-4284 Pocket watch: significant gold and enamel hunting case pocket watch, 5th Shah of Persia, Mozaffar ad-Din, ca. 1905 Ca. Ø55mm, ca. 131g, 18-carat gold, very fine painting of the 5th Shah of Persia on the front, Mozaffar ad-Din, as commander of the Persian Guard, original diamond and ruby setting; on the reverse, the Persian coat of arms featuring a lion, a sabre, a sun and a laurel wreath, the rim also beautifully enamelled, serial number 47722, dome inscribed ‘Mouvement de la Vallee’, dome also listing the complications: minute repeater and chronograph, glazed movement, highly complex Swiss precision lever movement with minute repeater and chronograph, extremely rare dial in red engine-turned enamel, gold numerals, gold hands, in working order. The watch is in a marvellous state of preservation; both paintings are original and have not been restored. The signature ‘Mouvement de la Vallee’ is an indication of the high quality for which movements from the ‘Vallee’ are renowned, such as those by Le Coultre or Louis-Elisée Piguet. This is either the personal watch of the 5th Shah of Persia or an extremely valuable gift watch. We are aware of another example with an identical case but a standard ‘white’ dial, from the Dr Crott Anniversary Auction 2015, with an estimated price of €75,000–85,000. Mozaffar ad-Din Shah (1853–1907) reigned as Shah of Persia from 1896 to 1907. now only: 35.000 €

Sold 292-4285 Pocket watch: a significant, large enamelled watch for the Chinese market, attributed to Jaquet-Droz, circa 1780 Approx. Ø61.5 mm, ca. 173 g, 18-carat gold, set with Oriental pearls on both sides, very fine enamel painting on the reverse, presumably based on a painting by FRANCESCO BARTOLOZZI, magnificent cylinder movement with diamond endstone and original dome; the design, ornate engraving, inscriptions and quality all point to this watch being attributable to the eminent Jaquet-Droz; enamelled dial, original, typical Jaquet-Droz gold hands, movement intact, minor damage to the glaze at the edge of the enamel (crack/flaw within the glaze – no chip). Enamel watches produced by Jaquet-Droz for the Chinese market are among the greatest treasures in the world of enamel timepieces. According to Luc Van Cauwenbergh, an expert and author on shaped clocks, only six examples with a musical score as side decoration are known to exist; one of these was offered at auction in Zurich in 2015 and sold for 14,900 Swiss francs. now only: 8.000 €

292-4291 Form watch: an absolute rarity, presumably the only known Patek Philippe ‘Flakon’ with an extract from the archives, 1854 Ca. 48 x 27 mm, 18K gold, blue enamel and diamonds set in silver, upper section with hinged flacon clasp, secret opening button for the lid concealed in one of the chain eyelets, numbered No. 1, opens on both sides, heart-shaped cylinder movement with key winding, signed beneath the dial, No. 9608, screw-fixed enamel dial, gold hands, original gold/enamel chatelaine with key and signet ring bearing the monogram CJ, with the movement intact, and some restoration to the enamel. The watch is a museum-quality rarity and is likely to be one of a kind. The number 1 also suggests this. We are not aware of any other flacon by Patek Philippe. The case maker is also thought to be from Geneva. The extract from the archives confirms the heart-shaped movement, manufactured in 1854. In many enamel flacon watches, the movement manufacturer and the case maker were different companies. In most cases, the movements were French or from Vienna; extremely rarely, they were from Geneva, like the prominent case makers. According to our research, there are around 10 known Patek Philippe shaped watches with heart-shaped movements, all dating from the 1850s; however, none of them was a flacon. now only: 19.000 €

292-4293 Pendant watch: important enamelled watch ‘Huaud fecit’, ca. 1685, movement by Domenicus Molenaer, Amsterdam Ca. Ø36mm, high-carat gold, fully enamelled, reverse depicting Herod, Herodias and Salome; inside, a castle with a knight; on the side, the usual four cartouches with views of the castle, which form a connection to the inner painting; signed verge movement; enamelled dial; gold hands; in unrestored original condition; fine firing cracks in the enamel; case signed ‘Huaud Le Puisné fecit’; movement intact. Many of the surviving Huaud cases from around 1685 were fitted with movements from the early and mid-18th century, as is the case with this clock. Huaud clocks with movements dating from around 1685 command extremely high prices, as the majority of these clocks have later movements; source: 1. Dutch movement from the 18th century. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/5e3). 2. Early 17th-century movement (https://www.cortrie.de/go/3eA). A Huaud enamel watch featuring an identical painting depicting Herod, Herodias and Salome is held in the Louvre’s collection. now only: 20.000 €

292-4294 Pendant watch: a significant, unique pair of gold and enamel pendant watches, Blois 1640/1650 1. Ca. Ø 33 mm, ca. 34 g, gold, high carat, probably 20 carat, case fully enamelled, top and bottom featuring elaborate, highly detailed mythological scenes; the reverse of the bowl depicts ‘THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS’ and the lid shows the ‘ALLEGORY OF JUSTICE’. The rim of the case features four cartouches with landscape scenes. The source material consists of engravings by Michel Dorigny; the images themselves are thought to be by Simon Vouet (1590–1649). The black bezel is known only from three cases from Blois; it features a very fine, early verge movement with vase-shaped pillars, a two-arm balance wheel without a hairspring, a mainplate signed ‘Laurier Blois’, an enamelled dial and gold hands. It is in an outstanding state of preservation, with minimal cracking around the edge. François Laurier was recorded in Blois around 1650 and died in 1663. Blois enamel clocks from around 1650 with movements from that period are museum pieces. Many of these cases, which were already prized as works of art at the time, contain 18th-century movements. The clock presented here is an original from Blois dating from around 1640/50, a museum-quality collector’s item. Comparable clocks: 1. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/xqG), 2. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/N9J), 3. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Xl1). 2. Case with absolutely identical dimensions and of absolutely identical construction, ca. Ø33mm, ca. 34g, gold, high carat, presumably 20K, case fully enamelled; the top and bottom feature elaborate, highly detailed mythological scenes, whilst the inside of the case shows an idealised landscape with a farmhouse and a fisherman in the river, and the inside of the caseback depicts a riverside landscape with trees and a village in the foothills. The reverse of the bowl depicts ‘Ceres, Bacchus and Venus during the grape harvest, watched by a lynx’, whilst the lid shows the scene ‘Ceres, Bacchus and Venus celebrating wildly’. The rim of the case features four cartouches with landscape scenes. The designs are based on engravings by Michel Dorigny; the accompanying images are thought to be by Simon Vouet (1590–1649). The movement is an early verge movement with vase-shaped pillars, a two-arm balance wheel without a hairspring, a mainplate signed ‘François Berger, Paris’, an enamelled dial and iron hands; the watch is in an outstanding state of preservation. NOTE: To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known pair of Blois enamel clocks. Equally remarkable is the fact that both clocks still possess their original movements from that period; the third aspect of their extreme rarity is the size of the clocks, which differs significantly from the usual size of known Blois enamel clocks! now only: 50.000 €

Sold 292-4295 Museum-quality gold agate snuff box, a so-called ‘stone cabinet’, attributed to Johann Christian Neuber of Dresden, c. 1780 Ca. 8.5 x 6.2 x 3 cm, ca. 172 g, octagonal case, later fitted with two French import hallmarks for gold dated 1864–1893. The octagonal snuffbox is set with 60 numbered stones (a very typical feature, also found on other snuffboxes by Neuber) of semi-translucent and opaque hard stones, including a variety of dendritic and banded agates, jasper, chalcedony and others, separated by narrow gold bars. The hinged lid is set with 16 stones, each individually numbered on the gold bars on the inside of the lid. In the centre is an oval portrait cartouche beneath a domed rose quartz with a narrow blue enamel border, framed by a wide, chased and engraved frame. The base is similarly designed; the numbers 45 to 60 are engraved on the gold bars around the edge and radiate outwards from a central oval agate panel. The sides are set with 28 rectangular agate inlays set within narrow gold frames and are also numbered (17 to 44). The gold borders on the lid are geometric and engraved with ovals and flowers; the vertical bars feature a wavy pattern, and the surrounding base strip is decorated with an interlaced band motif. The box is of outstanding quality and in very good condition. Johann Christian Neubers’ precious boxes are now held in major collections and museums around the world. They possess a special allure. Both the meticulous technique of the gem-setting and the gem-cutting itself, and above all the very tasteful selection and arrangement of the stones, have long made Neuber’s boxes highly sought-after collector’s items. The Dresden court jeweller and gem-cutter Johann Christian Neuber (1736–1808) learnt the crafts of goldsmithing and gem-cutting in Dresden under his future father-in-law, Heinrich Taddel. In 1762, he was admitted to the Dresden Goldsmiths’ Guild. From 1767 he worked for the court; from 1769 he was in charge of the Green Vault; and in 1775 he was appointed court jeweller. Neuber’s works are characterised by early Classicism. His speciality was the creation of snuff boxes adorned with gold and gemstones, which were frequently presented as royal gifts. In 1781, as a token of honour from the Saxon King Friedrich August for the French diplomat Baron de Breteuil, who played a key role in bringing about the Peace of Teschen, Neuber crafted a ceremonial table, which is regarded as his masterpiece. Further octagonal ‘Steinkabinett’ snuff boxes by Johann Christian Neuber are illustrated and described in *Gold, Jasper and Carnelian: Johann Christian Neuber at the Saxon Court*, edited by Alexis Kugel, London 2012. A round ‘Steinkabinett’ snuff box is held in the Hermitage collection. If any of his works come onto the market at all, they fetch collector’s prices at auction. Sold 292-4310 Unique North German carriage clock with hourly self-striking mechanism, attributed to Michael Pfündler, Schleswig, c. 1670 Ca. Ø11cm, ca. 1220g, silver, outstanding case quality, case with extremely elaborate pierced design, hinged lid, depictions of people and mythical creatures, scene engraved on the reverse with an astronomical/astrological motif, depictions on the sides on the themes of philosophy, poetry, geography and geometry; case with bell; early verge movement with hourly self-striking mechanism; mainplate signed ‘Michael(l) Pfaundler’ (one of the known signatures of the German watchmaker Michael Pfündler from Schleswig); off-centre dial with an engraved rural scene inside and further engravings on the theme of astrology, original iron hands, very good condition, presumed original silver key, a museum-quality rarity. We are not aware of any other carriage clock with a comparable case. Information on the clockmaker: Pfündler, first name Michael (Pfaundler, Pfreundler) from Schleswig, originally from Innsbruck, took part in the Gottorf expedition to Moscow and Isfahan in 1635. Duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf also sought to find a trade route to Russia and Persia that did not go round Africa. For this reason, on 6 November 1633, he dispatched an expedition from Hamburg to Moscow. It was led by the merchant Otto Brüggemann and the ducal councillor Philipp Crusius. Adam Olearius served as secretary to the expedition, which comprised 34 people. The delegation arrived in Moscow on 14 August 1634. Although they were unable to conclude a trade agreement with Tsar Michael I, preparations for the next expedition began immediately upon the delegation’s return to Gottorf Castle on 6 April 1635. This expedition was to take them to the Persian court in Isfahan. Michael Pfündler was responsible for overseeing the expedition in his capacity as a watchmaker. Extensive details about the watchmaker and the watch in question can be found here: (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Q4M). Hammerprice: 25.000 €

292-4311 Pendant watch: Museum-quality, large Renaissance pendant watch with stackfreed, striking mechanism and sundial, South German, c. 1580 Ca. 90 × 60 mm, ca. 251 g, fire-gilt brass, the entire case is pierced. The oval bell is situated in the base. The reverse of the case depicts a mythological scene: beneath a canopy stands the Argonaut Jason with the Golden Fleece, surrounded by typical Renaissance foliage and two greyhounds. The lid is adorned with floral and figurative scenes: at the bottom are two angels blowing trumpets, above them are monkeys, followed by Renaissance-style dolphins, and the design is crowned at the top by an angel with outstretched arms. A further small lid, also pierced, is fitted in the centre (lid replaced at a later date); when opened, a horizontal sundial with a compass is visible (the compass is no longer original), and a thread is attached to the lid to cast a shadow. The compass features a silver plate with an engraved eight-part wind rose. This early timepiece is a verge movement with an alarm mechanism without a fusee (various restorations). The stackfreed is used to balance the spring force. The florally decorated spindle clasp, made of gilt brass, is secured with a pin. The two-legged iron escapement (without a hairspring) is limited in its movement by a regulating lever with two escape pins made of pig bristles. The dial, made of fire-gilt brass, features two hour scales for 1 to 12 o’clock and 13 to 24 o’clock. The border is engraved with deer and winged fantasy figures, as well as floral scenes. The rotatable silver alarm disc is mounted in the centre. The hands are made of iron. The enclosed sundial made it possible, under suitable conditions, to regulate the mechanical gear-driven clock and reset it correctly. The clock is exceptionally rare and comes from a significant German collection. Only a few comparable pieces are known, which have already fetched collector’s prices at auctions: e.g. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Dd1). now only: 20.000 €

Sold 292-4312 Pendant watch: a significant, museum-quality astronomical watch in gold, enamel and rock crystal, made by S. Bartram c. 1620–1630 Ca. 90 x 45 mm, ca. 232 g, exceptionally rare size, gold, enamel and facetted rock crystal, signed oval movement with balance wheel and gut string, exquisitely engraved astronomical dial with 7 complications, calendar, moon phase and zodiac calendar, single-hand, silver dial with engraved village scene, very good condition, in working order, a sensational early astronomical pendant watch. Provenance: Sotheby’s 1982, estimated price 200,000–250,000 Swiss francs, previously in various important collections, including the Carl Marfels Collection, the Edward Hornby Collection and the George Daniels Collection, illustrated in Clutton/Daniels’ *Watches* Nos. 109–111. Gold pendant watches from this period are generally extremely high-quality, museum-grade collector’s items: 1. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/NoQ). 2. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/NoQ). The hammer price includes 19% German VAT! This means that the price will be reduced by 19% for buyers with a delivery address outside the EU. Only a few examples are known to feature a highly complicated astronomical movement. The watch has been known for many decades through numerous changes of ownership and is considered unique. Opinions among experts differ regarding the case. According to George Daniels, the movement and case date from around 1620; there are clear similarities with the gold and enamel setting of the Streibel watch. According to Simon Bull, a renowned expert on early clocks, it is highly likely that this clock is one of the famous works by Reinhold Vasters, who created significant rock crystal, gold and enamel pieces in the 19th century and incorporated important original components from the Renaissance period into his clocks (https://www.cortrie.de/go/Ble).(https://www.cortrie.de/go/EZZ). His outstanding works are now held in major collections and museums and fetch record prices at auction. Seventy years after his death, design drawings discovered at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London proved that, for example, numerous exhibits on display there of the ‘Renaissance jewellery’ in vogue at the time, as well as at least 45 others from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, were of his own making. These include, for example, the famous ‘Rospigliosi Bowl’, which had previously been attributed to Benvenuto Cellini. Hammerprice: 65.000 €

292-4313 Fragment of an early single-hand Renaissance turret clock with hour strike, Brenner, Copenhagen 1563 Ca. 21 cm high, fire-gilt, case decorated with scenes based on Virgilius Solis’s series of copperplate engravings depicting the nine heroines and heroes of history; case: bronze, fire-gilt, engraved, 1 hammer / 1 bell. Dial: superimposed brass numeral ring with Roman numerals ‘I–XII’ and inner 24-hour scale with Arabic numerals, as well as push-buttons for night-time reading, engraved centre, blued iron hands. Movement: iron frame, iron and brass gear train, later chain/fusee for the walking mechanism, good string/fusee for the striking mechanism; verge escapement and spoon-shaped escape wheel are missing; incomplete, in need of restoration. A stepped, black ebonised hardwood plinth from a later period, with four pressed, gilt ball feet, serves as the base. The two-part, telescopic case features a square, moulded plinth with contemporary scrollwork engravings. On the front, alongside the engraving of the year 1563, are Stephan Brenner’s initials ‘SB’ and the coat of arms of Copenhagen. A coat of arms bearing the initials ‘OB’ in the centre of the hour dial indicates the watch’s first owner. The three sides feature engravings from the series of copperplate engravings ‘The Nine Heroines and Heroes of History’ by the Nuremberg copperplate engraver and draughtsman Virgilius Solis (1514–1562): On the right, Judas Maccabeus, the Jewish freedom fighter of the 2nd century BC; on the reverse, St Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine; and on the left, Jael, who killed an enemy of the people of Israel with a blacksmith’s hammer and a tent peg. According to Abeler’s *Meister der Uhrmacherkunst* (*Master of the Art of Watchmaking*), Stephan Brenner was probably a German watchmaker. He moved to Copenhagen in 1554 and became the court watchmaker there. He collaborated with Johan Sibe, for example on an astronomical clock dated 1556. Works by Brenner from the years 1556, 1561, 1576 and 1598 are held at the National Museum in Copenhagen. Further clocks dated between 1558 and 1597 are held in major museums and private collections both within and outside Denmark. Maker’s mark ‘SB’. Sold 292-4315 Table clock: extremely rare Renaissance figure clock ‘Mary with the Infant Jesus’, ca. 1620, monogram ANR (Nikolaus Rugendas) Ca. 32 cm high, brass, fire-gilt, glazed wooden base, base bell, early verge movement with self-striking mechanism on the bell, monogram ANR (Nikolaus Rugendas of Augsburg), time displayed via a rotating crown, modernised from a gut string to a chain drive, movement intact. This clock, known as the ‘Strahlenkranzmadonna’, was on loan as part of two exhibitions in Munich and Washington in 1980–81: in 1980 at the Bavarian National Museum in the exhibition ‘Die Welt als Uhr’ (‘The World as a Clock’) and at the National Museum of American History and Technology (Smithsonian Institution) in the exhibition ‘The Clockwork Universe’. Both museums enjoyed great success with these exhibitions; in Munich alone, there were more than 82,000 visitors. A catalogue of the same name, edited by Klaus Maurice and Otto Mayr, was published to accompany the exhibition; in it, the ‘Madonna statuette’ is illustrated and described as an exhibit on pages 238 and 239.
