267-4304 Pocket watch: significant 'patent chronometer' with Fasoldt's coaxial double-wheel anchor chronometer escapement, ca. 1870 Ca. Ø 51 mm, ca. 154 g, 18K gold à-goutte, guilloché, case maker's punch MRM, movement display window, Charles Fasoldt's patent chronometer movement No. 540, gold chatons, patented fine adjustment in gold, wolf-toothed winding wheels, chronometer balance, signed and numbered, original, perfectly preserved enamel dial, steel hands, in working order. Only a few of these extremely rare chronometers still exist, and some of them have already achieved record prices of over 100,000 Swiss Francs at Geneva auctions. The condition of this item is almost like new, making this piece a very special rarity. Fasoldt was born in Germany in 1818 and was sentenced to death in 1848 for his participation in the revolution. However, he managed to escape from prison and emigrated to the United States. He settled in Albany and began building an impressive company that, in addition to watches, produced measuring instruments and microscopes, including his famous chronometers. He sold the watches for 150 to 300 dollars each, a significant price for that time. All the watches were designed by Fasoldt himself, and almost all of them featured his patented lever escapement. For his pocket watches, he invented a mechanism for winding and setting the hands – this paved the way for the transition from key-winding to crown-winding systems. On 7 March 1865, Fasoldt patented his extraordinarily reliable lever escapement, which requires no lubrication and has a very strong resistance angle on both pallet forks. To prove the reliability of his escapement, Fasoldt conducted a spectacular test: He attached one of his pocket watches, along with several watches from other manufacturers, to the connecting rod of a steam locomotive for a round trip from Albany to New York and back. After the bumpy ride, Fasoldt's watch showed only a slight deviation, while all the other watches had stopped after just a few minutes. 11.000 € - 40.000 €

Ø 64 mm, approx. 190 g, silver contest case with glazed movement, extremely unusual chronometer calibre with 21 jewels and experimental construction for the power reserve, chronometer balance, lever movement, fine adjusting device, signed, serial no. 379509, silvered dial with power reserve indicator, blued steel hands, in very good condition, in working order. This watch was part of the 1919 Geneva Observatory Chronometer Competition in the "Chronomètres 1re Classe Mention Honorable" class and received a score of 711 points, placing 29th out of 81 chronometers. The chronometer was also submitted to the 1919/1920 chronometer competition organised by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, and was awarded the title "especially good" in the "Kew - Class A" category, scoring a sensational 92.8 points. The chronometer has a special, probably experimental mechanism for the power reserve indicator, which is also signed. We know of no other V&C pocket chronometer with this construction. Vacheron & Constantin, like Patek Philippe, produced these extremely rare chronometer movements primarily for chronometer competitions at various observatories. As a rule, these items were not intended for sale and therefore did not have a standard case design. They often remained in the possession of the manufacturer for decades before eventually coming into circulation. Due to the signature on the case, it can be assumed that this extremely rare French chronometer was restored/modernized around 1900 by E. Fröhlich. However, the movement and dial are in their original condition. Joseph Thaddeus Winnerl (1799-1886) was born in Mureg/Styria on 25 January 1799. He completed his apprenticeship with Georg Schmidt Fidel in Graz in 1816. From 1823, Winnerl worked in Breslau, then at Kessels in Altona, at Urban Jürgensen in Copenhagen and from 1829 in Paris, where he worked for Breguet, among others. Today he is considered one of the most important French chronometer makers. A comparable chronometer movement is the pocket chronometer No. 433, sold at auction in Geneva in 1999 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/KgZ). 5.000 € - 15.000 €

Marine chronometers with additional functions are extremely rare. Robert Molyneux, a student of Thomas Earnshaw, initially worked with Charles John Cope, another student of Earnshaw. On their expedition with the ships “Hecla” and “Fury” in 1821, Parry and Lyon used, among other things, chronometer no. 405 from Molyneux & Cope. Molyneux later developed an effective auxiliary compensation for chronometer balance wheels at the same time as Eiffe. He was considered one of the best of his time. Molyneux's chronometer No. 1326 was used as the captain's marine chronometer during the Darwin expedition and fetched over €38,000 at one of our auctions. 3.000 € - 10.000 €

267-4333 Table clock: important, horizontal Renaissance table clock “The Rape of the Sabine Women”, c. 1570/1580 Ca. 12 × 12 × 8cm, square, gilt brass case on four feet, base plate engraved with a portrait of a nobleman, base plate with three winding openings for three barrels, self-striking, alarm mechanism missing, full plate movement engraved with cherub heads, verge escapement, fire-gilt dial, single-handed. The special feature of this clock is the side relief made of solid silver, which depicts scenes from Roman mythology in great detail and is of the highest artistic quality. In those scenes, the men of Rome carry out a mass abduction of young women from the Sabine people. An incised engraving on the inside of the base could refer to the Nuremberg clockmaker Reimann, who is mentioned around 1580. Provenance: Sotheby's Auctions, table clocks from this period with relief cases are extremely rare and are museum-quality collector's items. The engraving describes and illustrates a clock by the clockmaker Zacharias Landteck (1670-1740), which shows the times of the sunrise and sunset on any day and at any place in the northern hemisphere. Only one of Landteck's clocks remains. The map shows California as an island. It was first published around 1705.
