Geneve no. 47756, case no. 47756, exquisite chronometer movement, rare quality, cylindrical hairspring, with golden wheels, wolf's toothing, big chronometer balance with gold screws, moustache lever, signed enamel dial, fine steel hands, in very good condition, in working order, rarity. Patek Philippe produced only a few pocket watch chronometer with this observatory caliber, a few with lever escapement and a few with spring detent escapement. This special edition with golden wheels and cylindrical hairspring was probably made for the English market. A comparable chronometer from the same year with the number 47683, also with the same case number, was sold in Geneva auction (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/MLl). With extract of the archive.

This watch was very likely made for a Polish count. A comparable piece was sold in Geneva auction in 2003 for over 9,000 CHF.

Ø57 mm, ca. 165 g, 18 K pink gold, "à goutte" hunting case, multicolored enamel monogram with the year 1886 on back, case punch Laurent Gostkowski, dome signed and numbered, glazed movement, precision lever movement, prime quality with golden wheels, wolf's toothing, perpetual calendar, repeating hours, quarters and minutes; unique, original and signed enamel dial; indication of moon and the 12 zodiac signs, indicated by central gold hand, weekday and date indication, subsidiary seconds, blued steel hands, in very good condition, in working order, rarity. Laurent Gostkowski was born around 1850 in Nice, France. He was the son of Patek Philippe's partners Wincenty Gostkowski and Marie-Antoinette de Rabaudy. Father Wincenty (Vincent) Gostkowski (March 29, 1807 - August 29, 1884) was born in Grzymki, Poland, and emigrated to Geneva in the 1830s. He was a lawyer and an early contributor and co-owner of Patek & Cie., formerly known as Patek, Czapek & Cie. On May 15, 1845 the company got renamed to Patek & Cie after the joining of Jean-Adrien Philippe and Vincent Gostkowski. On June 30, 1847, at the age of 40, he married the French woman Marie-Antoinette de Rabaudy of Brest, twenty years younger than him. For this marriage Antoine Norbert de Patek and Jean Adrien Philippe were two of the three witnesses. On January 1, 1851, the name of Patek & Cie. changed in Patek Philippe & Co. On January 21, 1876 Vincent Gostkowski left the company Patek Philippe and founded with his son Laurent the family business Laurent Gostkowski in Geneva and later in Paris. Among their subcontractors was another former employee of Patek, Czapek & Cie, Henri Majewski from Lwów in Poland. The company won a watchmaking silver medal at the 1878 Paris World's Fair. Shortly thereafter, Gostkowski opened a new workshop near the Quai des Bergues in Geneva. One of the employees of Gostkowski was Emmanuel Cottier (1858-1930) father of Louis Cottier (1894-1966), a genius who, among other technical innovations, also invented the Patek Philippe World Time mechanism in 1931 (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/OA9). Only a few watches from Gostkowski and Majewski, the former employees/partners of Patek Philippe, are known so far. All, however, represent the very highest Geneva quality and unmistakable resemblance to the early highly complicated Patek Philippe watches of the 1870s/1880s.
