Pocket watch: exceptional heavy lepine with self-striking mechanism and repeater, 18K gold, gold hallmarks from 1833, signed Breguet a Paris
Ca. Ø56mm, ca. 149g, 18K gold, very solid quality, technically highly complicated verge movement with rare half-hour self-striking mechanism and hour repeater, released by a small button in the pendant, enamel dial (small craquelling), blued Breguet hands, in working order. The watch has a very rare striking mechanism, on demand it strikes the number of past hours by pressing the button in the pendant, and it also selfstrikes independently on the full and half hour, rather than the simple half-hour strike as usual. Even though the watch does not come from Breguet's workshops, as the signature probably suggests, it is a highly complicated heavy gold striking watch from the first half of the 19th century. The weight of almost 150g for an open face 18K gold Lepine from this period is impressive!

Ca. Ø57mm, ca.165g, 18K gold, special hunting case "Frosted-Decoration", à-goutte case, case number 234803, movement number 90535, deck chronometer 1st class with spring detent chronometer escapement, chronometer balance, wolf's toothing, screwed gold chatons, signed enamel dial in very good condition, blued Breguet hands, in excellent condition, in working order. This is 1 of only 5 known examples of Patek Philippe deck chronometers with chronometer escapement. 1. The watch shown here with the number 90535, provenance auction Geneva 1999 "The Art of Horology in Geneva: Patek Philippe Legendary Watches", hammer price 57,500CHF (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/Wd6). 2. The "sister watch" No. 90534, illustrated in Huber & Banbery "Patek Philippe" page 172 and today in the Patek Philippe Museum. 3. The "sister watch" No. 90538, matching with the present chronometer, illustrated in Huber & Banbery "Patek Philippe" page 170. 4. The sister watch No. 90536, tested at the observatory in Geneva in 1908, lost. 5. The "Pleister" chronometer, auctioned in Geneva in 2007 for 88,500CHF (https://www.cortrie.de/go/2AV). With the exception of the "Pleister" chronometer, which was made much earlier, all other chronometers of this type known today were made in 1892. It was probably a small series of less than 10 pieces. The chronometers were built specifically for chronometer competitions and were not actually sold. This is also the reason for the enormous rarity. This also applies to the number 90538, according to Huber & Banbery, not sold. The present chronometer 90535 was tested in 1903, 11 years after production, and received a special award. Chronometer 90536 was tested in 1908 and the 90538 even in 1915 and 1916. All these chronometers were handed in by Patek Philippe. The extract from the archives states that chronometer 90535 was sold in 1904, the year after the chronometer competition.

The chronometer 1313 is mentioned in the "Astronomische Nachrichten" of 1842. Expedition chronometers by Kessels are absolute rarities and are almost never offered. The watchmaker Kessels originated from Maastricht and came to Altona at the beginning of the 19th century, where he had his workshop and flat in the Kleine Mühlenstraße. When the astronomer Schumacher moved to Altona in 1821, he established the Altona Observatory and published the Astronomische Nachrichten. With Kessels soon developed close relations. Probably also because the language talented Schumacher was able to give the still French speaking Kessels a hand (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/1DG). Kessels, who was born on 15.05.1781 in Maastrich, the Netherlands, and died of cholera on 15.07.1849 in Claverhem near Bristol. He was one of the most important chronometer makers working in Germany even if he was not the most famous from the early days. Altona belonged to Denmark at that time, but in the understanding of the Germans it is a German town and therefore he is listed in the literature as a German watchmaker. After stays in London and Copenhagen he worked in Paris with Abraham Breguet and Winnerl and then settled in Altona, where he became self-employed. He quickly became famous as a chronometer maker for the Danish Navy. In addition to ship chronometers, he also made pocket chronometers and astronomical pendulum clocks.
