287-4189  Pocket watch: extremely rare, large ‘Barillet type’ musical watch, Francois Demanel in Brussels, circa 1820

Ca. Ø62mm, ca. 166g, 18K pink gold, No. 16434, dome signed, extremely rare barrel movement with independent musical mechanism featuring a barrel-driven mechanism (Barillet) and quarter-hour repeater, magnificently gilt and engraved, exceptional quality, signed enamel dial, pink gold hands, musical mechanism triggered on the hour, in working order and so well preserved that it appears to have been used very little; only the small slide for muting the musical mechanism and the repeater is missing. So-called Barillet-type musical watches are exceptionally rare and differ completely from the usual musical watches of the period. The musical mechanism is designed entirely differently, as it is a high-quality barrel mechanism which, due to its thickness, was unsuitable for pocket watches and was predominantly used in enamel boxes. Only a few pocket watches with such a musical mechanism are known and are highly sought-after collector’s items (https://www.cortrie.de/go/wVY).
