292-4048 Pocket watch: early Adolph Lange Dresden, Grade 1A, sold in 1874 to Schumann, New York

Ca. Ø51mm, gilted, double-glazed, screw-down American case, very early A. Lange precision lever movement, Grade 1A, gold lever, gold escape wheel, screw-mounted gold chatons, diamond endstone, hand-engraved clasp, blued steel screws, signed ‘Adolph Lange Dresden No. 9306’, perfectly preserved, signed enamel dial, blued steel hands, with movement intact and in a very fine state of preservation. Particularly in the 1860s and 1870s, many Lange movements were sold to America and fitted into American cases there. The watch is supplied with an extract from the archives confirming its authenticity.

As co-founder Gerhard Lange maintained close ties with Glashütte, the Bremen-based jewellers were one of the most important and exclusive distribution partners of the world-famous A. Lange & Söhne manufactory in Glashütte. These watches were manufactured by A. Lange & Söhne in Glashütte (often to the highest quality grade, ‘1A’), had their own numbering system and were supplied to Brinckmann & Lange. The extract from the archives confirms its authenticity despite differing numbers and its service with the Kriegsmarine; delivered in February 1945.
