292-4181 Pocket watch: extremely rare Silesian pocket watch with a false-pendulum dial and enamel painting, signed Glogau, c. 1700
Ca. Ø56mm, ca. 130g, double silver case, outer case in repoussé, outstanding, solid quality, a masterpiece of the art of repoussé case-making, signed Mauris, depicting the mythological scene ‘The war hero Marcius Coriolanus with his mother Volumnia and his wife Virgilia’, inner case smooth, case maker’s hallmark IMC with crown, extremely rare verge movement with enamelled medallion, border fire-gilt and magnificently decorated, exceptional pillars, champlevé dial with cut-out for the mock pendulum, signed ‘Glogau’ faintly legible on the edge, adjustment via the dial, date display, iron hands, movement intact, cleaning recommended, extremely rare. Marcius Coriolanus (also Gaius Marcius Coriolanus or Coriolan for short; *before 527 BC; † c. 488 BC in Antium) was, according to legend, a Roman hero and general whose pride, folly and obstinacy led to conflicts with the plebeians. He was banished from Rome and subsequently waged war against his own hometown, which he only ceased at his mother’s request.
