292-4270 Pocket watch: extremely rare, large ‘Barillet-type’ musical watch, c. 1820
Ca. Ø56mm, ca. 120g, 18-carat pink gold, extremely rare barrel-type movement with an independent musical mechanism featuring a barrel-driven mechanism (barillet) and quarter-hour repeater, magnificently gilt and engraved, exceptional quality, signed enamel dial, pink gold hands, musical mechanism activated via a slider on the rim, in working order and well preserved. So-called ‘barillet-type’ musical clocks are exceptionally rare and differ completely from the usual musical clocks of that period. The musical mechanism is designed entirely differently, as it is a high-quality barrel mechanism which, due to its thickness, was unsuitable for pocket watches and was predominantly used in enamelled boxes. Only a few pocket watches with such a musical mechanism are known to exist and are highly sought-after collector’s items (https://www.cortrie.de/go/wVY).
