292-4293  Pendant watch: important enamelled watch ‘Huaud fecit’, ca. 1685, movement by Domenicus Molenaer, Amsterdam

Ca. Ø36mm, high-carat gold, fully enamelled, reverse depicting Herod, Herodias and Salome; inside, a castle with a knight; on the side, the usual four cartouches with views of the castle, which form a connection to the inner painting; signed verge movement; enamelled dial; gold hands; in unrestored original condition; fine firing cracks in the enamel; case signed ‘Huaud Le Puisné fecit’; movement intact. Many of the surviving Huaud cases from around 1685 were fitted with movements from the early and mid-18th century, as is the case with this clock. Huaud clocks with movements dating from around 1685 command extremely high prices, as the majority of these clocks have later movements; source: 1. Dutch movement from the 18th century. (https://www.cortrie.de/go/5e3). 2. Early 17th-century movement (https://www.cortrie.de/go/3eA). A Huaud enamel watch featuring an identical painting depicting Herod, Herodias and Salome is held in the Louvre’s collection.
