292-4217 Pocket watch: large gold musical watch with repeater, Theodore Le Roy, Paris, c. 1820
Ca. Ø56mm, ca. 140g, 18K gold, dome signed ‘Theodore Le Roy Palais Royal’, musical movement with silence function, cylinder escapement, quarter-hour repeater, music on the hour and on demand, signed enamel dial, steel hands, in working order and well preserved. Theodore Le Roy (born 1788, died 1839) moved his watchmaking business to the Palais Royal in Paris in 1813. In 1827, he entered into a partnership with August Pierre Lepaute; in the same year, they were appointed court watchmakers to the King (Brevet d’horlogers du Roi). Following Theodore’s death in 1839 and his son’s joining the business, the world-renowned name Le Roy & Fils was established, which was retained by subsequent owners throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Signed musical clocks by the founder of the renowned Le Roy firm are extremely rare on the market!
