292-4210 Table clock: an exceptionally magnificent Renaissance-style ‘chest’ clock, probably from Nuremberg, circa 1700
Silver case, hinged chest, exceptionally magnificent decoration; inside the lid, the clock features rectangular plates, a balance, no hairspring, iron hands; the balance wheel turns but requires adjustment; a unique, museum-quality collector’s item. The clock is signed ‘Sebald Schwarz Nürnberg’, a well-known Nuremberg clockmaker of the 16th century. As this clock was made around 1700, the signature can only be a tribute to him, perhaps crafted by a grandson of his who was a clockmaker around 1700.
