292-4186 Pocket watch: 20K gold verge watch with a rare relief case, Butaud a La Rochelle, circa 1750
Ca. Ø47.5mm, ca. 83g, very rare case design with high relief, floral motif of fantastic quality and condition, 20K gold, signed verge movement No. 249, signed enamel dial, gold hands, movement intact. The quality of the case is outstanding; the watch appears to have been worn very little, meaning the high relief shows hardly any wear. La Rochelle was a stronghold for renowned watchmakers such as Fonnereau and Hubert. Jean-Baptiste Butaud was an 18th-century ‘Maître horloger’ (master watchmaker) based in the historic port city of La Rochelle in France. Historical archives confirm that he lived and worked in the parish of Saint-Barthélemy on the prestigious Rue du Palais, where he crafted pocket watches and grandfather clocks typical of the 18th and early 19th centuries, marked with the signature ‘Butaud à la Rochelle’
