292-4205 Sundial: a significant, early ivory folding sundial, attributed to C. Bloud, Dieppe, c. 1680
Ca.8.5 x 7.5 cm, ivory, folding, compass, base featuring an annual calendar and corresponding zodiac signs, inside of lid featuring various cities and their corresponding geographical data, good condition. An expert report exempting the item from the ban on sale is available! Charles Bloud was one of the most significant makers of ivory sundials. A particularly fine Charles Bloud folding ivory sundial is held in the collection of the Mathematical-Physical Salon in Dresden, and another in the German Clock Museum in Furtwangen. A further four sundials are held in the collection of the British Museum. The Museo Poldi Pezzoli houses a large collection of sundials, including ivory sundials from Dieppe (Seine-Maritime).
